Through his camera lens, Dave Lloyd captured one of the enduring moments of our lifetimes.

"I expected to see (the plane's) nose or a tail, but there was nothing," Dave recalled a year later, adding: "I didn't know what to think. " He regained his wits quickly enough to shoot many superb images - including that award-winner that ran in Dave's newspaper, The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown, and appeared in such publications as Newsweek and The New York Times.

But long before learning he had that awful disease, Dave was a troubled soul. I urged him to keep fighting through his troubles, and he promised me he would.

Among the many heartfelt Facebook comments, former Fox-8 news host Sherry Stalley wrote: "We have lost a beautiful piece of life. Priceless images that only Dave Lloyd could see, shoot and share with all of us!" .

And sometimes we leave those news moments altered by the seeing and reporting.

I remember vividly my last meeting with Dave Lloyd. But he was smiling and upbeat.

The powerful picture also graced the cover of the book "Heroes Were Made," produced for last year's 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Dave died Wednesday of cancer at a hospital in Pittsburgh.

But I'm convinced Dave's end actually began that morning more than a decade earlier, as he stood beside a smoking crater near Shanksville and documented the horrors of a day that changed our nation - and also changed the man behind the lens.

Cancer, it turned out, was too tough a foe to overcome.

Somerset County resident Stokes Clarke said of Dave: "He leaves a legacy of being able to communicate our reactions to the triumphs and tragedies that come to us all in life through his photographs.

Among the many powerful images Dave produced that day was one of stunned emergency personnel standing around a smoking hole in the ground.
