The Photographers' Gallery

The Photographers' Gallery

Founded in a converted Lyons tea bar on the edge of Covent Garden in 1971, the Photographers' Gallery has, for over 40 years, been a major London venue - a place that has put on shows of grisly Mexican reportage featuring everything from earthquakes to arson; displayed the strange and astonishing archives of the London fire brigade; and mounted work by a few of the world's most famous exponents of the medium. The photographer in a fishing vest, Hasselblad in hand, is fast becoming extinct.

With its cutaway black rendering, stretches of the original, late-Victorian patterned brickwork and a wraparound ground-floor window, not to mention floor-to-ceiling windows on the upper storeys that stop you thinking you're standing in a box, the £9.

The gallery closed for refurbishment two years ago - and reopens on Saturday. It was a dismal corner, an area of blank walls and unloved pavements that did not appear a step up in the world. The ground-floor glass is being referred to as "the Edward Hopper window", after the American's 1942 painting Nighthawks, a depiction of a desultory late-night diner. But by doubling the gallery space with a two-storey extension, Irish architects O'Donnell and Tuomey have done a terrific job. Everyone is a photographer now, but photography means many things. A digital wall, presently showing artworks based on antediluvian 1987 GIF image file technology, reminds us how much photography has changed and goes on changing. Just as darkrooms close and film becomes unavailable, photography itself has become the most ubiquitous and democratic medium of all. Late-night dive or not, the gallery still has a cafe fixation. Two new layers of high-ceilinged galleries have been added, meaning photography, film, video and digital imagery, along with works that demand controlled humidity and light levels, can finally be shown in the right conditions. The building is elegant, airy, and lets you focus on the work. As it races on, the new gallery is trying to keep up.

Boston Camera Club exhibits at TCAN

Boston Camera Club exhibits at TCAN

For their first show at The Center for Arts in Natick, Boston Camera Club members are exhibiting a striking mix of images that reflect the prestigious organization's emphasis on "photography as an art and science.

Finks said the show would run through May 31 in the first-floor gallery and theater of downtown arts center at 14 Summer St. and has been "in continuous existence'' for 131 years since 1881. A member of the club's Executive Committee, she said members meet "every single Tuesday'' in Parish House of All Saints Parish Church in Brookline with certain meetings devoted to particular specialties, such as educational lectures, workshops and photographing live models.

Since its founding as the Boston Society of Amateur Photographers which it changed two years later to its current name, the club has remained true to its original mission "to promote photography as art and science and to broaden the lives of its members,'' Winkleman said.

Longtime member Arlene Winkleman said the 150-member Boston Camera Club is the second-oldest club of its kind in the U.

And Jurgen Lobert is showing a stunning overhead view of Boston that seems to have been taken by a satellite. The panorama is then curved into what is called a polar panorama using Photoshop.

Arthur Sharenow of Lexington is showing gorgeous natural scenes of a mother egret feeding her babies and a striking shot of the rock formation Delicate Arch in Utah.

A jewelry maker with an eye for detail, Melanie Guerra, of Westwood, is showing a close-up of the Gehry Amphitheater in Chicago that's as multifaceted as a fine diamond.

For their first show at The Center for Arts in Natick, Boston Camera Club members are exhibiting a striking mix of images that reflect the prestigious organization's emphasis on "photography as an art and science.

Since joining the club a year ago, Guerra said the in-house competitions and contact with other club members have renewed her longtime interest in photography, making it "much more than a hobby.

Erik Gehring of Roslindale is showing a stunning shot of a goldenrain tree glistening after a shower. Shooting in extreme close-up, Paul Snider, of Brookline, photographed tulips and other flora with botanical precision.

And in one of the show's most powerful photos, Ilya Schiller of Brookline used a gnarled and bent cypress tree to frame a wondrous panorama of Monument Valley.

Since joining in 2000, the 79-year-old Sharenow said members' "informed critiques'' have provided a helpful mix of encouragement and technical know-how.

Several members display varied approaches to photographing flowers and trees.

He predicted viewers would be "blown away'' by the overall quality of photos on display. ,'' he said. I just want to take the very best photos I can.

"Most members in the show have won awards in the club's monthly competitions,'' said the Framingham native who serves as BCC's exhibitions and publicity coordinator.

Shot in extreme close-up, her gorgeous photo, "Golden Waterfall,'' captures a rushing torrent of water in ways both realistic and abstract.

Since submissions to the exhibit weren't limited to a specific theme, members are showing a satisfying mix of mostly color photos.

American Child Photographers Charity Guild Gives Families Images of Hope

American Child Photographers Charity Guild Gives Families Images of Hope

Watching a slideshow of photographs filled with parents holding their children, some kissing their sick infant's head or sharing a look of devastation with their partner as they clutch their dying child, you might wonder what type of person is strong enough to be able to capture these last moments of an innocent child's life. Other times, the children are battling illnesses such as cancer or muscular dystrophy and Drallos has some time to arrange photography sessions.

"I get emails, maybe not weekly, but close to weekly from people who say they wished they had known about this service or people who lost their babies 40 years ago - they still think about that baby," Drallos said.

Sometimes, Drallos is called out of bed at 3 a. , rushing to the hospital where every minute counts, racing to beat the clock.

"She said to me, "I think about you every day and I thank God for you.

That is the moment Drallos realized what it was she was supposed to be doing.

"It all went together," she said.

Crediting the idea to her mother, who died of cancer in 1997, Drallos says she was the one who told her before she died that something important was waiting for Drallos and she would do something great with her photography.

Seven months pregnant with her daughter, Carrigan, when her mother passed, Drallos decided against returning to work as a special education teacher and instead began focusing on her photography business.

"She really is the most amazing person," Smith said.

"I'll be honest, it was very difficult to even think about doing it, because we knew those were going to be our last ones," Debbie Smith of Clawson, MI, said. You'd be shocked that she passed away five days later.

With her 6-year-old daughter dying of cancer, that child's twin with disabilities and an upset older brother, Smith said that no one, including herself, was in the mood for family portraits that day- until they got there and met Drallos.

It wasn't until four years later, however, after receiving a call from some acquaintances who knew she was a photographer that Drallos figured out precisely what she was supposed to be doing with her talent to help others.

"They (the parents) called me and asked me if I would photograph their twin baby girls who came premature," Drallos said. I did two rolls of film, it took me like 20 minutes. I did their feet, did everything, I just felt like I had to capture everything about these babies.

Leaving the hospital that first time, Drallos says she cried the whole way home while the baby girls passed away just hours after having their pictures taken.

Smith was referred to Drallos in 2008 for her family portraits.

Convincing the parents to make the appointment, however, and not miss out on their opportunity sometimes takes a gentle prodding. Mackenzie looks great in them.

Watching as her work flashes across the screen, Drallos is able to recall each child, each family and every story of why she was called in to preserve a moment for a grieving family.

"That baby was so sweet," Drallos says as she gives a small smile while looking at an image of a big-eyed baby on the computer screen.

By January, Drallos had decided to start her nonprofit and organized thousands of photographers across the world whose mission it is to give parents something of their children they would always be able to keep.

Photographer who saw the worst now at peace

Photographer who saw the worst now at peace

Through his camera lens, Dave Lloyd captured one of the enduring moments of our lifetimes.

"I expected to see (the plane's) nose or a tail, but there was nothing," Dave recalled a year later, adding: "I didn't know what to think. " He regained his wits quickly enough to shoot many superb images - including that award-winner that ran in Dave's newspaper, The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown, and appeared in such publications as Newsweek and The New York Times.

But long before learning he had that awful disease, Dave was a troubled soul. I urged him to keep fighting through his troubles, and he promised me he would.

Among the many heartfelt Facebook comments, former Fox-8 news host Sherry Stalley wrote: "We have lost a beautiful piece of life. Priceless images that only Dave Lloyd could see, shoot and share with all of us!" .

And sometimes we leave those news moments altered by the seeing and reporting.

I remember vividly my last meeting with Dave Lloyd. But he was smiling and upbeat.

The powerful picture also graced the cover of the book "Heroes Were Made," produced for last year's 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Dave died Wednesday of cancer at a hospital in Pittsburgh.

But I'm convinced Dave's end actually began that morning more than a decade earlier, as he stood beside a smoking crater near Shanksville and documented the horrors of a day that changed our nation - and also changed the man behind the lens.

Cancer, it turned out, was too tough a foe to overcome.

Somerset County resident Stokes Clarke said of Dave: "He leaves a legacy of being able to communicate our reactions to the triumphs and tragedies that come to us all in life through his photographs.

Among the many powerful images Dave produced that day was one of stunned emergency personnel standing around a smoking hole in the ground.

Wolverton: Autodesk's 3

Wolverton: Autodesk's 3

Last week, Autodesk updated its suite of 3-D printing and modeling applications, releasing an iPad version of 123D Catch, a program that creates a virtual object by stitching together two-dimensional photographs taken of a real-world one. The virtual objects created from those pictures were lifelike, detailed, seamless and mostly complete (there were the occasional holes where I either missed a spot in photographing or the program couldn't put the photos together).

In its original incarnation, 123D Catch required several steps.

That said, the program has some significant limitations.

Autodesk introduced 123D Catch last fall, originally as a Windows program.

The new iPad app makes that process much simpler.

123D Catch is worth a download if only for the sheer coolness of it, the ability to rapidly and easily turn photographs of an object into a 3-D virtual image.

My conclusion was that while the new app is awesome, the suite remains very much a work-in-progress that is likely to greatly frustrate the average user.

And the results are amazing. There's no uploading to your computer or importing to a separate program needed. The app collects those pictures into what the program calls a "project," which you can then send to Autodesk to convert into a virtual object.

Thanks to that streamlining, the whole process can take as little as 10 minutes, from start to finish. Autodesk officials said they are planning on making an iPhone version, but declined to say when it might arrive.

Shared vision: masterpieces on show alongside photographs they inspired

Shared vision: masterpieces on show alongside photographs they inspired

"Photography as a narrative tool is a comparative newcomer," he wrote in 2007. We are simply drawing upon a centuries-old skill of reading pictures that our predecessors initially learnt from the excellent painters.

"In the first few decades of the new technology of photography there was real interest from painters too, so there was an entire nexus between the two art forms.

In a series of "exceptional interventions", contemporary photographs by Richard Billingham, Craigie Horsfield and Richard Learoyd will be displayed in the gallery's permanent collection, alongside great 19th-century paintings by Constable, Degas and Ingres.

It was unconscious mimicry but showed just how long the rules about images have been laid down. It is more of a polemic. We also wanted to look at the use contemporary photographic artists have made of this notion.

"It is a pictorial language that audiences have learnt to read over the centuries," Wiggins wrote in 2007.

For Wiggins, it was Raphael, more than any other artist, who drew up the template for captured images, shaping the gestures and patterns for later narrative painters, including Caravaggio, Goya and Manet.

He added: "We can see that the earliest photographers were looking closely at paintings and modifying these compositional ideas while they worked.

"We had been thinking about doing this type of photographic exhibition, which puts forward an argument, for some time," said Christopher Riopelle, the gallery's expert in post-1800 paintings and co-curator of the show with Hope Kingsley from the Wilson Centre of Photography. " To prove his theory, Wiggins compared the composition of a news shot of Lady Thatcher sharing the frame with a gorilla during a visit to London Zoo to old masters that show the Virgin Mary adored by surrounding saints.

The exhibition, which will travel to Spain in early 2013, will incorporate just under 90 photographs displayed alongside chosen paintings from the gallery's collection.

Robert Capa and Gerda Taro: love in a time of war

Robert Capa and Gerda Taro: love in a time of war

It begins with a photograph.

On her release, she used a fake passport to travel overland to Paris, where she was looked after by a communist network.

Though Friedmann could seldom afford to buy film and often had to pawn his camera to survive in Paris, he schooled Pohorylle in the rudiments of photography and found her a job in the newly formed Alliance Photo picture agency. "She picked him up, gave him direction. Taro then returned to Spain alone, despite the growing concerns of her friends who, having seen her recent photographs of the fighting, feared for her safety.

Though the context of the photograph is still contested, the imagined conversation does describe what probably happened that day just before a Francoist sniper returned fire from across the hills, killing the militiaman who was running down the hill for Capa's camera.

In Spain, Capa soon developed a fantastic reputation for taking photographs no matter what the risk, setting the tone for war reportage as we now know it. It is the only way to walk the path.

By then, she too had experienced radical politics, arrest and flight. Transported to a nearby field hospital, Taro died from her injuries in the early hours of the following morning. They both believed that their photographs could change the world and change the way people think. And their photographs did. Allan protected her with a film camera as shrapnel and rocks fell around them. One always writes with one foot on the ground and the other in the air. She was arrested by the Nazis on 19 March 1933 and interrogated about a supposed Bolshevik plot to overthrow Hitler. He was in a bad way when they met, and maybe without her it would have been the end for him. Capa went on to become the most famous of the two, and arguably the most famous war photographer of the 20th century due to his visceral images of the D-day landings on Omaha Beach in Normandy. His most famous estimate would become a dictum by which ensuing generations of war photographers worked: "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough.

With the Spanish civil war as its main backdrop, the narrative is an uneasy, sometimes awkward, merging of fact and fiction, and will almost certainly offend the many guardians of both Capa and Taro's reputations just as it will no doubt entrance the mainstream cinema-going audience should it be made into a Hollywood film. This is reflected in the dialogue, the literary tension, the humour, the fights, the passion, the sex, the mixed feelings. That's part of the novelist's job. Their lives were entwined, but she was very much her own woman, and he knew that. She had reinvented herself - but the Capa myth was so strong that, even when she died, some newspapers described her as Robert Capa's wife. "She was a pioneering woman both as a photographer and a political activist," says Ziff.

Together, André Friedmann and Gerta Pohorylle would change their names and their destiny, becoming Robert Capa and Gerda Taro, the most celebrated visual chroniclers of the Spanish civil war. She travelled back and forth to the frontlines, shooting what she saw, often driven by a mix of humanity, political commitment and a shrewd understanding of the power of the photograph to shape public opinion.

Throughout 1937, Taro visited several frontlines, either with Capa or on her own.

On Sunday 25July, the pair found themselves trapped in a foxhole near Brunete as bombs fell around them relentlessly. Then, as republican troops began pulling out of the area, Taro and Allan ran out of the foxhole and hitched a ride on the running board of a car while the planes continued to strafe the retreating convoy. In the chaos, the car was then rammed by an out-of-control republican tank and the couple were thrown into the dirt. She was 26.

Horst Faas, AP combat photographer, dies at 79

Horst Faas, AP combat photographer, dies at 79

As chief of photo operations for The Associated Press in Saigon for a decade beginning in 1962, Horst Faas didn't just cover the fighting - he also recruited and trained new talent from among foreign and Vietnamese freelancers.

But he was best known for covering Vietnam, where he was severely wounded in 1967 and won four major photo awards including the first of his two Pulitzers.

"Horst was one of the fantastic talents of our age, a brave photographer and a courageous editor who brought forth some of the most searing images of this century," said AP Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll. He might have bled to death had not a young U.

His health deteriorated in late 2008.

Faas' Vietnam coverage earned him the Overseas Press Club's Robert Capa Award and his first Pulitzer in 1965.

Burly but agile, Faas spent much time in the field and on Dec.

A native of Germany who joined the U. -based news cooperative there in 1956, Faas photographed wars, revolutions, the Olympic Games and events in between.

In later years Faas turned his training skills into a sequence of international photojournalism symposiums.

Faas also helped to organize reunions of the wartime Saigon press corps, and was attending a mixture of those events when he became ill in Hanoi on May 4, 2005.

Among his top proteges was Huynh Thanh My, an actor turned photographer who in 1965 became one of four AP staffers and one of two South Vietnamese among more than 70 journalists killed in the 15-year war.

My's younger brother, Huynh Cong "Nick" Ut, followed his brother at AP and under Faas's tutelage won one of the news agency's six Vietnam War Pulitzer Prizes, for his iconic 1972 picture of a badly burned Vietnamese girl fleeing an aerial napalm attack.

Faas was a brilliant planner, able to score journalistic scoops by anticipating "not just what happens next but what happens after that," as one colleague put it.

His reputation as a demanding taskmaster and perfectionist belied a humanistic streak he was loath to admit, while helping less fortunate ex-colleagues and other causes.

He was hospitalized first in Bangkok and then in Germany, where doctors traced his permanent paralysis from the waist down to a spinal hemorrhage caused by blood-thinning heart medication.

Although requiring a wheelchair, he continued to travel to photo exhibits and other professional events, mainly in Europe, and collaborated in the publishing of two books in French - about his own career and that of Henri Huet, a former AP colleague in Vietnam.

Faas for a time shared a Saigon villa with the late New York Times correspondent David Halberstam, who said of Faas, "I don't think anyone stayed longer, took more risks or showed greater devotion to his work and his colleagues.

Faas left Saigon in 1970 to become AP's roving photographer for Asia, based in Singapore, ranging widely on assignments.

The same year, he won a second Pulitzer Prize, along with Michel Laurent, for gripping pictures of torture and executions in Bangladesh.

In 1976, Faas relocated to London as AP's senior photo editor for Europe, until he retired from the news agency in 2004. Army medic managed to stem the flow. Meeting Faas two decades later, the medic recalled the encounter, saying, "You were so gray I thought you were a goner.

On crutches and confined to the bureau, Faas was unable to cover the February 1968 Tet Offensive, but directed AP photo operations like a general deploying troops against the enemy.

"Generally we had to go pretty far into the field but this was a situation in which the war came to us.

Faas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning combat photographer who carved out new standards for covering war with a camera and became one of the world's legendary photojournalists in nearly half a century with the AP, died Thursday in Munich, said his daughter, Clare Faas.

He was co-editor of "Requiem," a 1997 book about photographers killed on both sides of the Vietnam War, and was co-author of "Lost Over Laos," a 2003 book about four photographers shot down in Laos in 1971 and the search for the crash site 27 years later.

In 1960, at age 27 and an AP photographer for four years, Faas began his front-line reporting career in the Congo, then Algeria.

As the war ended in 1945, the family fled north to avoid the Russian advance on Berlin and two years later escaped to Munich in West Germany.

Motherhood figures strongly into photographer's own art

Motherhood figures strongly into photographer's own art

This week I visited a friend in Parksville, a new mother who had just given birth at the house of photographer Gordon Lafleur.

It wasn't until 1984, when Lafleur moved to Parksville, that he began doing portraits. C.

He admits it definitely became "an obsession.

He completed a two year photography program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1971 and did commercial and industrial photography for a number of years after.

Lafleur says that as opposed to the fleeting nature of many other forms of media, he is enamoured with the concept that when he does a portrait or family photo for someone, though the audience is small, to that really limited audience it is an extraordinarily precious thing.

The process of making family photos can be very moving and complex on a wide variety of levels, says Lafleur.

He thought he had found his vocation, and didn't consider portrait work at the time because back then the industry wasn't taken very seriously.

This Mother's Day marks the 13th year Lafleur has been making his "Tribute to Mothers and Daughters" exhibit, a display of his portraits of mothers and daughters, at the Quality Resort Bayside in Parksville. Either that or work for National Geographic," he says.

People often suggest Lafleur also do a father-son exhibit, but he says "guys will not do this," explaining that the majority of his clients are women, as it is women who initiate portraits and family photos.

"Men can be very emotional about it when they see the photographs and so on, but if it were up to the men to organize this stuff it would never happen," he says.

"Of course this was the '60s and early '70s.

Though he says portrait photography ended up being much harder than he thought it would be, Lafleur both liked it and was good at it, and it has kept him busy ever since.

Part of what keeps him interested in portraiture is its longevity.

He says though he is not a woman and can't speak from personal experience, he has noticed there is a connection between mothers and daughters that is quite different than that of mothers and sons, or sons and fathers, and it is something he seeks to capture in his portraits.

"I mean, I have a hard time right now because I work on my own and I do not have women telling me what to do anymore," he says with a laugh, reflecting on the two women he worked with in his studio for over 20 years.

Lafleur knew he wanted to be a photographer since his high school daysin Edmonton, Alberta when he had a darkroom stationed in his bedroom. Photographer of the Year" by the Professional Photographers Association of B.

He gives an example of a woman who came in who was recently widowed and commissioned what he says were some "really poignant" photos with her two young daughters.

"You put your family picture on the wall, it's a statement to individuals who come and look at it.

"When you do a photograph like this, you're helping them make a statement, and you're helping them to define a point in their lives, whatever that point is," says Lafleur.

Willie Middlebrook, photographer who documented African-American life, dies at 54

Willie Robert Middlebrook, a photographer who sought to enlarge public perceptions of the African-American community through painterly depictions of its people and places, died Saturday at Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, Calif.

"What he has done so successfully that many others have not done is he has bridged the gap between . It was so fulfilling for him," Outterbridge said. "He used to say, 'It's all in the eye. ' He was very fascinated with the uniqueness of our eyes," Jessica Middlebrook said.

His survivors include three brothers, five children and seven grandchildren.

Middlebrook often used self-portraits to explore conflicting ideas about identity, a theme that he could not escape as a heavy-set, 6-foot-tall black man who wore his hair in dreadlocks and turned heads whenever he entered a room. "I've never been to jail, and if you put drugs in front of me I probably wouldn't know what to do with them.

He frequently focused his lens on his family and friends, suggesting his deep personal bonds with loved ones along with their shared ethnic heritage.

His eye was drawn to black life in varied manifestations, including tender compositions of a grandmother and child and grittier images of police helicopters over Watts and live chickens waiting for slaughter.

Middlebrook was "one of the most important contemporary photographers working today, even though he has not had the recognition," said Kent Kirkton, director of the Institute for Arts and Media at California State University,

Northridge, which featured some of Middlebrook's early photographs in a show held in conjunction with the region-wide exhibition Pacific Standard Time.

Born in Detroit on Aug. Middlebrook helped set up the academy's darkroom and "he never came out. arts organizations, including the Los Angeles Photography Center, the Children's Gallery at Barnsdall Park in Hollywood and the Watts Towers Art Center. He did large-scale things.

Middlebrook worked as an administrator at a number of L. "He was one of the most gifted and knowledgeable photographers in the country. These are the varieties of images that need to be seen. His contemporary work makes powerful statements about the life of African-American people.

New gallery and studio will mark Maz's decades on film

A master of classical portraiture and internationally acclaimed photographer, Maz Mashru holds some of the highest accolades that any photographer can be awarded.

Now its beautiful new gallery and showroom marks a new beginning; where people can be inspired and where Maz can produce yet more fresh, innovative and exciting products and services - a well-known signature of the brand.

Famous faces he has photographed have included Jackie Chan, Dionne Warwick, Tony Blair, Colin Salmon, Nina Wadia and many, many more.

Today, Maz and his team have invited Leicestershire's prominent businesses and VIPs to the official opening of the new gallery and showroom, being conducted by Leicester East MP Keith Vaz.

He has now established the most spectacular reputation in Leicester through the years.

Today, Maz of Leicester runs one of the finest international photographic studios, bursting with creative energy and stunning quality.

Maz would really like to thank all his loyal friends, customers and suppliers for supporting him and invites you to a special launch event.

For more than three decades it had been an industrial factory with steel girders, exposed brick, loose pipe work and broken windows.

Trained alongside Rocky Gunn, Monte Zucker, Al Gilbert and other famous classical photographic artists, Maz's interpretation of light and shape in his images is a rare talent for any modern-day photographer.

As a brand, Maz of Leicester is celebrating five decades of producing timeless portraiture as well as contemporary images.

For 50 years, its heritage of quality and innovation has earned the respect and trust of generations.

To celebrate 50 years of trading, Maz of Leicester has moved to a spectacular events showroom and photography studio - probably one of the East Midlands' largest studios.

Maz, originally an exile from Uganda, became the photojournalist for the Argus Newspaper usually photographing Idi Amin and his Army.

Based on the belief that every life event is a celebration, our pioneering brand has introduced services and products for our customers which are distinguished by quality and creative art.

The building, previously a factory in the 1970s, was derelict.

Now fully restored, the showroom looks incredible with suspended ceilings, stunning lighting and specially-sourced wallpaper that has the appearance of velvet, a black, off white and gold colour palette to co-ordinate with the branding.

Photography Open 2012

Photography Open 2012

This brief but tantalising exhibition featuring seven photographers with a connection to the Nottinghamshire area, each take different pathways to explore the themes of light, love and danger - the culmination of their efforts geared towards the chance of being chosen for a solo show at the same venue next year.

Every theme taken on by each artist is treated seriously and given expression through careful thought and treatment that belies the youth of several of the participants. They are as destitute as the Chatsworth photographs along with their swollen light.

Continuing in a darker vein, Roshana Rubin-Mayhew takes the subject matter a little further, with a group of pictures bulldog-clipped to the wall like hospitals X-rays, and you know from the doctor's face that it's not good news.

Returning to the soil is David Severn, whose portraits of the people reclaiming the land abandoned by the coal industry in the 80s in North Nottinghamshire show as much social honesty as it does artistic merit.

Next, Emily Macinnes' portraits of three Kurdish refugees in Nottingham, young and old, either engaging with or avoiding the camera's gaze, full length or nearby, the only theme something indefinable, three people separated from their homeland, families and culture, but still living.

The theme is continued in the selection made by Calum James Crowther, in which a reversed aesthetic plays the same role, this time the story is told by the scenery, empty of players who seem to have just left, unused glasses sitting on a table, 60s whiskey bottles (painstakingly re-created by the artist himself) left on their sides, as the people themselves bury their pain offstage.

Finally Felicia Staub, who specialises in lith printing, a process that uses black and white photographic paper with lithographic developer to accentuate the shadows and light and bring a dream-like quality to her subject matter. It'll be too close to call about how should win but they all deserve to be seen and appreciated - remember to put a couple of quid in the donation bowl too.

SickKids: Photographing this special section was a moving experience for Star photographer

SickKids: Photographing this special section was a moving experience for Star photographer

My assignment editor first asked me to work on our SickKids special section back in February. Josh was born without the ability to smile.

It is a rare privilege to be invited into a person's life, particularly if those people are at their most vulnerable. The children are scared, sore and surrounded by strangers.

Yet, time and again, patients, parents and staff allowed me to ask them questions, chat, and finally take their picture or interview them for a video.

I agreed to the assignment, of course. Elisa Linton turned 18 on March 31. Turning 18 is a major milestone.

Her family had a small and simple party for her at their house. The atmosphere was quite jovial. I wasn't sure how I would react to spending so much time there, now.

The first step along the way is to sit down with members of the communications team at the SickKids Foundation. The SickKids team was great at identifying and suggesting ideas for what was happening around the hospital.

The most difficult task went to the SickKids team of identifying subjects to go with the stories. It is difficult finding a parent with a potentially terminally ill child who will agree to let us tell their story and take their photo. (Of course, the privacy of the family and the hospital's need to respect it is paramount. I had a camera in my hand with a wide-angle lens and I snapped a quiet frame or two. It was one of those totally uplifting experiences.

There is a story behind each story we covered. She was diagnosed with Sanfilippo B Syndrome when she was 4. The condition is progressive and most kids die before the age of 16. After some thought and discussion, a tentative story schedule was arranged.

It's very important while taking photos of somebody to make a personal connection with them. I just felt black inside, however.

It is a difficult thing taking pictures of such strong emotion.

Just a few years ago, my daughter unfortunately spent three weeks at SickKids, and months after as an outpatient. My daughter is fine now, the hospital a distant memory for her. Surgeons were going to perform the first of two operations to correct this.

While chatting, a few small tears started rolling down Kevin's face.

Israeli photographer Adi Nes mixes style, sexuality

Layering themes of masculinity, sexuality and ethnicity, Israeli photographer Adi Nes brings his highly stylized work to this year's Scotiabank Make contact with Photography Festival, which celebrates its 16th year this month in Toronto.

Nes' focus on staged photography partly comes from his interest in drawing in viewers to both look at and analyze his photographs, particularly the ones that examine present-day Israel, images that Nes feels convey underlying narratives of national identity.

While the photographer's art is highly personal, he admires the interpretations that outside viewers can bring. "This is the beautiful thing in art - everyone can see whatever they like. "As long as they speak about one thing, they can deal with various other things.

"After I have a sense of a series, sometimes it takes about a year to understand the issue of the frame," he says.

"The challenge of the photographer is to catch the viewer for additional than one second in front of the picture," he says.

Pictures of Oxford usually involve dreaming spires, punts on winding rivers and bicycles chained to fences.

"We also have some pictures taken by the Redbridge travelling community and they provide a real insight.

The exhibition also features a blank wall, which is available for members of the public to come along and paste their own pictures, confessions and memories.

Old Fire Station director of arts Jeremy Spafford said: "We are glad to be presenting these extraordinary photos of ordinary Oxford which have been taken by residents of the city including travellers and homeless people.

The images depict graffiti on a bridge being passed by rowers, a butcher in his shop, traffic cones in a river and an odd Oxford meeting on a punt. ".

One of the winning photographs - of a butcher in the Covered Market - was by Ben Mostyn, 28, from Grandpont.

Jan Williams, from the Caravan Gallery, which helped organise the competition, said: "These pictures look absolutely fantastic.

It aims to bring the city to life with these four images being judged the best entries to the Here and Now exhibition.

"I was trying to re-experience Oxford and get to meet some of the locals and reacquaint myself with it because it had been such a long time since I had been here.

"It was great to see Oxford from people who live here and what they like and dislike about their home city.

He said: "I had been away from Oxford for a while living in the States with my wife, but I am an Oxford local who was born here.

The four images pictured right were all taken by individuals who live in the city and feature in a whole new exhibition in Arts at the Old Fire Station in Gloucester Green.

"This is excellent accessible art at its best celebrating the lived-in much-loved Oxford.

Stevenson's TraQline: Consumers Still Want Printed Photos

The Stevenson Company, a top provider of consumer data and market research, released the findings of its TraQline Photo Behavior report, a monthly survey of tens of thousands of consumers that measures their usage of photo products and services such as digital/film photography, printing, sharing and other behaviors. Online retailers like Shutterfly and Snapfish are the leaders in photos printed online and mailed home, with 32 percent and 30 percent share, respectively.

Of the 26 percent of photos ordered online and picked up at a retail location, Walgreens emerged as the share leader in photo prints, with 46 percent. Convenient location is one of the top reasons consumers purchase photo products in stores.

Promotional offers are the top reason consumers purchase online.

"In spite of technological advances and options for viewing and sharing photos online, consumer demand for printed photos and merchandise remains significant," said Eric Voyer, VP of The Stevenson Company.

Location. Location.

Other TraQline Photo Behavior findings include:

Size matters when it comes to photos - more than 84 percent of printed photos are 4 by 6 inches or smaller. Knowing what drives purchase decisions positions retailers for ongoing growth.

She said some U. ca/help/maps/businessphotos/get-started.

Chantal Roy, a photographer accumulating images for this purpose in Ottawa, said panoramic views of Canadian businesses' should start appearing on Google Maps in the coming weeks.

At this point, the resources are not available to include particularly large business locations, such as some shopping malls, Roy said.

A release form Roy's company, PrezenceMedia, said photographers are available to take images of companies in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Victoria and in other Ontario cities such as Windsor, London and Kitchener

She said companies pay a one-time fee of at least $250 to be part of this new Google initiative.

"It's going to take at least two, three weeks before we can see some in Canada," Roy said. Companies opting for this are permitted to link directly to their Google images from their own websites or their Facebook pages, Roy said.

Mexico: four found dead in Veracruz

Mexico: four found dead in Veracruz

Two press photographers have been found dead in a canal in the Mexican port city of Veracruz on alongside a former cameraman and a fourth body, less than a week after another journalist based in the city was killed in her home.

Of the nine Mexican journalists killed last year probably as a result of their work, four were from Veracruz.

Ricardo Gonzalez, of the press freedom activist group Article 19, said journalists in Veracruz are being targeted as a result of their position "as witnesses to the decomposition of the state.

The attacks intensified following the change of state governor 18 months ago that, observers say, destabilised a previous division of the territory between the Zetas and the Gulf cartels.

A local paper called Notiver, which has a reputation for being more critical than most, has been hit particularly hard.

State authorities later said Esteban Rodríguez, a former cameraman, was also among the dead as well as a woman named as Irasema Becerra, said to be Luna's girlfriend.

The two photographers tortured and killed this week were reportedly among a group of journalists who left the paper in fear around that time. A political reporter from the same paper called Yolanda Ordaz, was found dead and dismembered a month later.

Regina Martinez, the Veracruz correspondent of the weekly national news magazine Proceso found strangled to death in her home last weekend, was the first journalist murdered in 2012.

Gonzalez, of Article 19, said there have been "absolutely no advances" in the investigation of any of the murders of journalists in Veracruz.

Sun, Sand and turquoise Sea are not all these islands have to offer, there is so many things to do, to discover and to enjoy and the discovery travel is going far behind the pristine beauty of the place. This motto is the result of his long experience in taking street photography around the World. When traveling, Jeremy's main objective is always to keep a really open mind about what he is seeing and a total respect for different people cultural customs but still he feels the need to share through his lens what he is discovering on his path.

The Bahamas is a small Country with more than 700 islands and keys sparsely located in a huge perimeter bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea which help local communities of each island to keep a very individual and specific heritage and way of life. The blend of history, cultures and people makes this tiny Nation a true amazement for curious and inquiring travelers. It also shows the diversity inside a single, yet small nation. When showing his photographs of The Bahamas to local people or people who have been visiting for a long time, the greatest reward for Jeremy is to see the amazement and surprised expression on their faces or to hear them say "I didn't even know this was here in The Bahamas" or "I see that every day and never noticed how beautiful it was. This, alone, shows the importance of local settlements and communities having their own identity, different activities, different natural resources, even sometimes different Ethnic group origins. Wherever you are living on this planet, whatever your personal life style is, Jeremy's hope when showing his work is to make you discover, think, enjoy, analyze and understand how everything can be completely different from what you are used to know and sometimes even only just few hundred miles away from home.

Jeremy will hold his first Private Photographic Exposition in The Bahamas in December 2012.

His work is a compilation of stunning HDR (High Definition Range) photographs presented as Photographic work of Art. Framed and matted photographs will be available for sale at the exposition as well as the event will also serve as the presentation of his first released collector's edition printed book. " There are just so many things that surround us on a day to day basis that we never notice or even see in detail.

Photographs are silent speakers but still are the most powerful media to send you a message. "ISLANDS OF THE BAHAMAS" will be published in hardcover on a single edition of only 500 copies; each book will be signed and numbered.
