Instead, he has always been an artist who follows his instincts, whatever the costs. " Did you fall out? "No. As he was cycling around, "trying to find all these places I'd read about in books", he saw a woman who literally stopped him in his tracks. "Everything I did, I did for her," he told a recent interviewer. Despite his street-tough exterior, a residue of childhood as a Jewish boy marooned in a tough Irish neighbourhood in Brooklyn, he is, at heart, a romantic, something his long self-exile has deepened. " This, you suspect, is the real story of William Klein's life: work as fun, with a little bit of confrontation thrown in. He returned to photography in the 80s, when he was finally recognised as a pioneer - his early books influencing generations of photographers in Europe, America and especially Japan. His wife, Jeanne Florin, died in 2005. "She was the most beautiful girl I ever saw," he says, his eyes lighting up, "I just had to go over and chat her up. It was a crazy scene, but I had fun. That's what I've been doing ever since. I put it to him that the film should really have been called In Search of Little Richard. "Yeah, he disappeared on us. ' The thing is, without that stuff, there was no Little Richard. She was all smiles, so I asked her out. Alongside his Tate Modern show in October, his London gallery, HackelBury, will host an exhibition of his art, William Klein: Paintings Etc. "So, who knows, I might surprise people all over again. The photographer and film-maker - one of the fantastic postwar iconoclasts - has three exhibitions opening in the UK this year . "Somebody turned one of the panels when I was shooting on a long exposure, and when I developed the pictures this already abstract shape was a beautiful blur. Through photography, you can really talk about what you see around you. They said: 'We're gonna organise your big comeback, but no crazy hairdos and no wild costumes. "He told us not to worry about galleries and collectors, but to go out onto the city streets and paint murals. "It's a lot of stuff that no one has seen before," he says. |

Today Google launched 'Google Drive'. Hopefully this is just the beginning of successful tools and creative exhibitions Google supports. Almost as important as their Macbook Pro now hosting the iCloud on any iOS 5 or higher. Unfortunately, the exhibition was only open to students and they were asked to choose to submit one image to a rather unimaginative set of categories such as "Me", "Travel" or "Sport". Nevermind. It also allows a myriad of windows such as Adobe or Photoshop to be opened even if the user does not have the supportive software. All in all, the exhibition looks promising and is a successful way for Google to promote their other upcoming projects and technological advancements for the arts community. I suppose no one at Google bothered to Google what the iCloud is before launching this news. Most significantly, it remains a good space for artists to store photo files, or other documents of importance without fear of late night coffee spills or the ever looming anxiety of the rainbow spiral of death. That is the greatest benefit of this new upgrade. In all fairness to Google and it's innovations, this tool might have potential benefits to artists if it lives up to be everything Google suggests it will. The exhibition was judged by Susan Bright who has written both Art Photography Now as well as Autofocus, along with Nigel Hurst CEO of Saatchi Gallery in London. Which could be useful for collaborating on articles. If the tool is as successful as Google is marketing it to be, this will be an important piece of kit for photographers the world over. It allows users to work on documents together. A powerful organization such as Google has a lot of potential to foster cutting edge and creative projects within the arts. |

An all-women group photography exhibition with a rather interesting theme 'femininity' is on at the Arpana Caur Art Gallery, Siri Fort Institutional Area, presently. " Indeed, the theme of femininity binds the pictures together very gracefully. Hence, their creations have been put together for the first time in this exhibit. Moushumee Jha, who has a background in cinema, art and theatre, has taken pictures of women working backstage during events, while Nin Taneja, who is also a painter, has portrayed women at the crossroads of life. Kausiki's video, called the 'War of resilience,' depicts travails of women in the conflict ridden North-east. They are complex and very difficult to understand. She first takes the print of a photograph on canvas and then paints on it. Even in 'Maayaa,' four of the nine photographers are rather new in the field. While Ashima has emphasised on the colours and visual feel of the cloth, Sakshi has got women figures screen, hand and block printed on them. She has caught them while engaged in various activities like putting on make-up- symbolic of beauty, holding a child- showing her as caring, and handling a mobile- portraying her as a successful professional. Shobha Jolly, a former businesswoman, has deftly combined both femininity and masculinity in her photographs. Nishat Rehman, who is pursuing her masters in visual communication from the College of Arts in Delhi, has photographed women's hands only. The rest are experienced camerapersons. | Mad Dog 21/21: Drivers Of The Purple Sage In the old days, to print a document you had to have driver software on your computer that matched an attached or nearby printer. For the most part, they aren't. New applications, new types of documents, new clients, or new printers meant finding new paths through the thicket of operating systems, networks, drivers, and page description languages. You can even consider tossing out those persnickety PCs and riding out on the new frontier where the mobile customers range. Some of the inspiration for this change in document processing came from the consumer market, where the companies that make digital cameras, photo printers, and particularly the ones that make both figured out that a little digital magic could give a big boost to family photography and its stimulating impact on the sale of gadgets and ink cartridges. And then there's always a means to hook a tablet or a smartphone to a PC on the same local network and then go out to that PC's printers using the drivers already on the PC. But if you are trying to run a company or even an office full of different users with different computing needs and way too many different types of printers, what is a feast for the home office hotshot ends up resembling the kind of meal the French give their fat-liver geese. So it's no wonder a lot of IT folk who, among other things, have to support a mob of end users, have been cheered up by the super friendly printing apps that first showed up on smartphones and now are becoming available for Windows, Mac OS and, if the dozing server vendors, which might be more than 50 % of them, wake up, on Linux, Unix variants, and even proprietary operating systems like IBM i and the mainframe environments. Basically, a customer, anything from a smartphone to a PC today and possibly anything at all, from a building's HVAC hub to a glass house server tomorrow, sends a document to a printer via a cloud server. The cloud server knows the printer's email address and the printer is always checking its email so it can spot, download, and print anything that's thrown at it. There's also software which provides a variation on this theme for road warriors. It's not a dead or even a dying concept. In fact, the smarter and more versatile printers are just like the machines in the prior generation except for a little extra in the IQ department that turns out to add nothing to manufacturing cost. That means a whole new or recent model from a progressive vendor, but it doesn'tnecessarily mean an expensive machine. One of these requires a network printer programmed to talk to cloud servers along with local customer devices. The server figures out what printer driver to use and processes the document into a printer data stream that goes back to the sending customer, which ships the stream to a special port on the network-attached printer. The only advantage this scheme offers over the first one is that it can work with a zillion network-attached printers sold and installed before the brainier method above made it to the marketplace. In practice, the process is within a couple of seconds but the client has to be in touch with the printer until the whole job is done, that can be a drawback. Some of the big consumer electronics companies also make mobile phones and portable computers (some with keyboards, some with touchie-feelie). The same evolutionary process added wireless connectivity to schemes that a few years ago involved hooking machines along with cables or moving flash memory cards from one socket to another. Somewhere in this region there's Google cloud printing, but so far it's been a nonstarter in business circles because it's type of tied to Google's Chrome browser and some other things that corporate computing folk simply find unattractive. This is a really old-style idea but it fits well in some settings because it does give the user organization a lot more privacy, security, and immunity from Internet connectivity issues. These days a lightweight, pared-down version of Linux is probably running inside every printer in your office, every router on your network, and every cable or DSL modem you use. Pricing varies as this new service seeks a practical balance between the high value of convenience and the low value people want to pay for ink-smeared paper. The second theme, a slightly simpler one than the first, involves two major conversations, one between the customer machine and a cloud server, the other between the customer machine and the target printer. Like just about everything else with a digital soul, printers, even low-end models, have whole computers in them. The smartphones and tablets you see around you also run either the Android cousin of Linux or the iOS offspring of BSD and Darwin. I think it's a dead app walking, but there are so many smart people inside Google that it's possible one of them gets put on this dreadful project. Before I take a look at a number of the apps being offeredby printer vendors, it's probably important to say that there are apps for phones and tablets from outfits that do not make printers but do provide a printing or formatting service. The issue isn't that the issues that arise are so hard to solve. It's just not the thing that is grabbing huge mindshare right now. Windows Professional and the other rich versions of PC software include or have access to innumerable printer drives. That's a nice thing and if you were on a high tech desert island, that's how you would want it. |

Later this month, 11 Magnum photographers will visit Rochester to photograph and exhibit new work in the birthplace of Kodak, under the project title "House of Pictures. Rochester was selected for its significance as the home of Kodak, and is especially interesting to the Magnum photographers at this pivotal moment as the area shifts further into a post-Kodak era. From April 14 to April 29, the photographers will live in a home together, work together, and put on a joint exhibit at the end of the visit. A unique opportunity to work on this Magnum project was awarded to about 50 photo students in area institutions including Rochester Institute of Technology and VSW, who have already begun to assist the photographers in scouting locations to shoot. Public lectures on the project have been planned for Monday, April 23, and Thursday, April 26, both at 8 p. "House of Pictures" will be provided live on magnumphotos. com/MagnumPhotos and @MagnumLFA on Twitter. PhotoDirector3 now includes an edit tab which offers a menu of tools, including the People Beautifiers that let editors make fast adjustments for teeth whitening, skin smoothing, wrinkle removal and so forth. Additionally, PhotoDirector3 provides an intuitive workflow and non-destructive editing system and a new user interface that is split into five main viewing panels: library, adjustment, edit, slideshow and print. The software's print tab offers a wide variety of customization options, allowing manipulation of things like dimensions and print. PhotoDirector3 is able to manage images shot by shot or in large batches, and now includes a number of extras, such as People Beautifying adjustments, that are easy and useful in portrait retouching. The library also presents digital photos in an intuitive interface and natively supports more than 40 RAW file formats. "The cause is the recent rain, which increases the moisture in the soil heightening the opportunity of the trees falling," a spokesman said. The Post was unable to contact Mr Attenborough. The Post understands Mr Attenborough turned around and raced back to flag down the freight train. The results were more damaging the following day at Medlow Junction. Another QRN train travelling reportedly at 100km/h from Brisbane to Melbourne, hit a tree which the crew believed had fallen across the track following strong winds. " . | Digital redeveloping photography as hobby PARKERSBURG - A decade of technological changes in photography and a near-absolute shift from film to digital imagery has had both positive and negative affects on the hobby. He has remained interested in photography since that time. "The technology is progressing so quickly, it's actually hard to keep up with it," he said. The largest change he has seen is the immediacy with which the photographer can know what he or she has in terms of pictures. If they didn't have their own darkrooms, it might be hours, days or even weeks before they knew what type of pictures they got as they waited for the film to be processed chemically and then prints made using related processes. The local clubs still have some who are interested in slide and film photography, but the majority now shoot digitally, Wigal said. Abbott thinks the clubs have changed with the times, although are still members who like to do things in more traditional ways. Those SLRcameras are exactly the same type that have been used in photography for decades. Making changes to the raw images to enhance the quality of the final print has also been done for years in the darkroom, but has become easier - if not always simpler for those who are not as technically literate - with the use of computers, according to Bibbee. Last week my office was at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. A motor-drive riff of seven-frames-a-second can capture 35 images from one moment of action. There is plenty of skill and luck in setting up and capturing a good remote shot. What's more to these floor spots, many photographers increase their coverage by setting up remote cameras fired by radio transmitters. Multiple remotes are common. It was at the side of the court, looking across the three-point line and toward the Kansas University bench. In my opinion, remotes can certainly help enhance the variety of coverage but don't necessarily enhance the quality of your coverage. Easier said than done. There is little chance of getting unique images. It's a similar situation at game time. One press of the shutter may set off five cameras. Since we didn't have many spare cameras, Nick set up only one remote. These are important positions, and a photographer's spot on the floor can mean the difference between capturing a critical play or staring at the back of a referee. In general, spots are assigned by importance of the media outlet. For instance, when a team locker room opens for interviews, dozens of writers and cameramen rush in to surround players. Wildlife photographer and writer Bill Marchel of Fort Ripley recently won the Nikonians 2012 Wildlife Forum February Challenge online photography contest. This is a change from last year's regulation that allowed keeping of walleye less than 18 inches. Walleye slot drops to 17 inches on Mille Lacs Anglers who fish Lake Mille Lacs Lake during the 2012 season will be able to keep walleyes less than 17 inches in length, according to the DNR. "We expect anglers to do very well at Mille Lacs," said Dirk Peterson, DNR Fisheries Section chief. The open-water bite ought to be very good, too. The walleye season is scheduled to open May 12. It's been well documented in recent years that beekeepers have been experiencing significant losses to colonies. He said the new regulation on Mille Lacs is identical to that on Rainy Lake and similar to regulations on several other large walleye lakes. Mille Lacs Lake is being managed this year for a safe walleye harvest level of 500,000 pounds. The Crow Wing County Land Services Department, in partnership with the Whitefish Area Property Owners Association and the Pelican Lakes Association, received a $7,750 Watercraft Inspection Grant from the DNR to inspect watercraft at public landings for Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). This summer, together with the Whitefish Chain, the Land Services Department will also provide inspectors for the county-owned Jones Bay Public Access on the west side of Pelican Lake. The positions will run from about May 9 through Sept. 3. The Crow Wing County Land Services Department will be accepting applications for two full-time seasonal watercraft inspectors. April 16, agricultural chemical investigators Greg Cremers and Mark Magusson from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture will present "How to manage Pesticides and Fertilizers for Beneficial Insects" at the monthly meeting of the North Central Beekeepers Association at the Northland Arboretum in Baxter. The tribal allocation is 142,500 pounds. Certain pesticides have been found in high levels in northern Minnesota beehives recently, and those hives have frequently seen complete losses due to premature mortality. The 17- to 28-inch protected slot is designed to keep the walleye harvest by state licensed anglers within the state's allocation of safe harvest. |

| Local hero: Bruce Davidson's photographs captured Harlem street life in the 1960s In 1956, Bruce Davidson, who'd taken his first pictures at the age of 10, was drafted into the US Army. For many, Davidson's deepest influence on the story of photography was in his portrayal of the inhabitants of East 100th Street, Harlem, New York. Davidson used an old-fashioned, large-format camera on a tripod with a dark cloth for this project. The images are tonally rich and sharp, and there is a knowing irony in his use of an essentially 19th-century technology to represent the Victorian living conditions of Harlem. His first critical acclaim, which underpinned his award of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 1961 and his 1966 solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, stemmed from his portrayal in 1961 of Brooklyn gangs, and principally 'The Jokers', which occupies one volume of Black g community, in which the viewer is given a pungent sense of the emotional gamut of youth, and the good and bad luck that flavoured these young lives. The ethos of Magnum is tangible in Davidson's work, with its narration of real lives and events well beyond the constraints of a magazine's page layout, or the stylisation of a newspaper's front-page image. Davidson's contribution to photography is immense, and the essence of it is captured in the publication this month of Black that he's undertaken over the past five years of editing and printing his archive has been an act of taking responsibility for how his contribution to photography is remembered. Davidson's intelligent revisiting of his archive and practical excitement at the alchemy of photography and its capacities to tell enduring stories is what makes him one of the most important photographers of our age. Western Australia's endless coastline and terrestrial landscapes make up almost one-quarter of the country's most picturesque views, according to the most renown Australian landscape photographers.
There were acclaimed views across the state from the red north to the stunning greenery of the Boranup Forest near Margaret River.
Tourism Council chief executive officer Evan Hall said it was not surprising WA was featured so many times.
"You will feel like a real Australian," he said.
The Kimberley was one of the photographers' most loved areas, representing six of the best views, including of Mitchell Falls (13), Eagle Falls (37), El Questro Homestead (38), Sir John Range (44), Kimberley Coastal Camp (73) and Wolfe Creek Crater on the edge of the Sandy Desert in the Kimberley's east (92).
"Hidden in the region's ancient heart are unspoilt wilderness frontiers, steep-sided mountain ranges, stunning gorges and waterholes, thundering waterfalls, massive abstract rock formations and ancient Aboriginal rock art.
"And on its coast lie some of the world's most beautiful beaches - all truly humbling natural elements to behold.
"The list illuminates the phenomenal range of world-class sights and sensory experiences this country has to supply," Australian Traveller managing editor Quentin Long said.
The Kimberley was particularly a must-see, Mr Long said.
"There are thousands of fantastic views in WA so there's always arguments over which are the very best but it's a fantastic state to have that argument in.
"This [list] just reinforces the excellent environment we have.
"We've got a fantastic coastline and terrestrial landscape [and] it's such an ancient landscape," he said.
Hardy Reef on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland topped the list, followed by an outback homestead in South Australia and the famous Twelve Apostles seen from the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.
Rock formations featured heavily in the list, though Uluru was ranked only 24th.
The top 100 was determined by a panel of nine Australian photographers who the magazine claimes have viewed extensive mileage of the diverse Australian landscape.
Along the coast, the Tantabiddi Sanctuary Zone at Ningaloo Reef was unsurprisingly rated in the top 20 (19) and Esperance's Great Ocean Walk was not far below at number 31.
They included Australia's most prolific landscape photographer Ken Duncan and award-winning Australian Geographic photographer Chris Bray.

Fared Adib, Sprint's vice president for product development told Reuters that it made sense for Sprint to stick with the EVO brand as the company has sold 7 million EVO devices in the roughly two years since its first launch. The same will be the case with the device's so-called High Definition (HD) voice capability, which Sprint may be the first to launch in the U. Adib would not give the phone's exact launch date but said that the company typically launches its devices a few weeks after pre-orders begin. For example, the phone's camera can take multiple shots when the user presses a button once, a feature known as continuous shooting. The phone will support a new high-speed fourth generation (4G) service Sprint is building into its network with a technology known as Long Term Evolution. Sprint plans to launch LTE services in its first markets around the middle of 2012, according to its president of network operations, Steve Elfman, who told Reuters at a Sprint event that LTE network support "will follow" soon after the phone launch. HD voice makes calls clearer and reduces the amount of background noise, according to Sprint. However the device may not immediately support fast data services and the new sound technology as it is expected to hit store shelves before Sprint launches services based on a multi-billion-dollar network upgrade it plans to kick off around mid-year. Rouleur magazine has confirmed on Twitter that its photographer Taz Darling, who suffered serious injuries yesterday when she was hit at speed by several riders who had just contested the sprint finish of the 100th edition of the Scheldeprijs on rain-soaked roads, is recovering from surgery she underwent last night. Darling had been among the photographers positioned shortly after the finish line to capture images of the sprint that brought the stage to a close, which was won by Argos Oli-Shimano's Marcel Kittel. We know that Rouleur is very popular among road. While we all enjoy looking at pictures of race action, the incident does show the danger to which cycling photographers regularly expose themselves to get those images, and that irrespective of the experience of the photographer or the focus on safety increasingly adopted by organisers, cycling can be an unpredictable sport, especially once elements such as wet roads are introduced. Yesterday evening, Rouleur managing editor Ian Cleverly, who travelled to Belgium today - editor Guy Andrews was already there - had told road. Press reports, and perhaps footage of the incident from Belgian TV channel Sporza - which we would stress does not show the collision itself - suggested that several involved had lost control of their bikes on the large sponsors' logos painted across the road close to the finish line, rendered particularly dangerous by the rain. The time is right to expand commercial filming and photography regulations around Capitol Hill, Del. At present, Union Square, an 11-acre swath of land that lies at the base of the Capitol's West Front, is the only spot from which commercial cameras can shoot the Capitol. "We are very satisfied with the Capitol Police Board's . Adding that "there is no policy or security reason why commercial photography of the Capitol Complex should be allowed at only one location," Norton suggested that Independence Avenue on the House side and Constitution Avenue on the Senate side should be among the sites to consider. Expanding such parameters would, among other things, be beneficial to children on class trips who want to pose for commercial photographers in front of the historic landscape, Norton said. In the past, she has also pointed out that filming at the Capitol is good for the District: Outside film and photo crews inevitably bring money into the city. On Monday, Norton sent a letter to the leaders of the House Administration and Senate Rules and Administration committees, which oversee Capitol grounds and security, to request that they explore whether more parts of the Capitol complex can be opened up to commercial filmmakers and photographers. Commercial filming and photography is prohibited throughout the rest of the campus. "However, we also believe that the transfer jurisdiction provides, for the first time in decade, an opportunity to engage in a broader view of whether to allow permits for commercial photography and filming at a few additional areas outside of the Capitol and Congressional office buildings. | Photographers bear witness to Cambodia's landmine legacy As part of international efforts to increase awareness around the impact of landmines, organisations working on the issue in Cambodia are turning to art, particularly photography, to illustrate the devastating legacy of unexploded ordnance that remain in the Kingdom even decades after the official end of armed conflict. Funded by foreign aid agencies of Belgium, Spain, Austria and Australia, Handicap International has worked to train teachers in supporting amputees and provided healthcare support in the rural provinces where mine injuries are most common. Handicap International also took the opportunity last week to commend the work of Spain's Agency for International Development Cooperation and the Cambodian Mine Action Centre. " . The organisations are two of many that conduct mine and ordnance clearing operations in Cambodia's provinces. "I hope people can leave the exhibition with hope and the belief that together we will be able to really make a difference. "It is important to illustrate what the problem and impact is, as well as showing what has already been achieved. Many of his photographs show MAG workers clearing landmines. Attending Fatal Footprint's closing at Meta House last week was John Rodsted, a photojournalist and part of a team that earned a 1997 Nobel peace prize for their work promoting an anti-landmine treaty. Rodsted didn't pull his punches when discussing the continuing impact of unexploded ordnance on Cambodian society. In an economy dominated by agriculture, and a rush to seize up the country's free land, the threat of dormant munitions left over from the Vietnam War and the Khmer Rouge still looms large, he said. "Think about how much it costs to bomb a country," Rodsted beseeched his audience. In 2010, the groups helped clear 5,500 mines from Kratie, Srav Vieng and Kampong Cham provinces in Cambodia's east, rendering 2. As for the upcoming exhibit at the InterCon, Sean Sutton says that despite its emotive and somewhat depressing topic, the exhibition isn't intended to stir feelings of doom and gloom. "People do that because they have no choice: use the minefield at risk of death or loss of limbs or go hungry," said the photographer. Any community growth and development is stunted by unearthed minefields, he said. Last week marked the closing of Fatal Footprint, a unique outdoor photo exhibition mounted on Sothearos Boulevard to commemorate Handicap International's 30th anniversary of operation in the country. "This is a great project and I encourage all young people who live, work or go to school in Hobsons Bay, regardless of their photographic skills to enter," Cr Briffa said.

Inspector Mathers said there was a wealth of talented young people in Hobsons Bay and the competition is about them using their talents through photography to promote the positive aspects of our community.
"Winners will also have their work featured on the Airtime flags at the Altona Meadows Skate Park later this year.
"I see this as a brilliant opportunity for young people in Hobsons Bay to view their community through a camera lens and to gain an appreciation of the excellent place in which we live and work," he said.
"It"s not about the most technically correct photo, it"s about capturing fantastic images and challenging young people to showcase how they see our community.
"We ask participants to use their imagination to capture a place or scene that typically represents Hobsons Bay or an image of the diversity of people and cultures we have at our doorstep. |

Defenders say the official coyness up to this point reflected two realities of the market in the 1990s. Mr Fisher and his successors declined to comment for this series. Prof Shih points out, however, that Mr Fisher, Mr Carp and their senior executives believed they had a duty to "maximise how much you could earn out of the traditional business". Wall Street applied another brake to Kodak's digital evolution. She concluded they were "more attentive and positive" towards those companies that tried to extend and preserve the old technology. The competition, from rivals such as Japan's Fujifilm, the German-Belgian group Agfa-Gevaert and Britain's Ilford Photo, was eating into its dominant position. It was only as late as 1999 that Kodak's roll-film sales peaked. The contrast with the market and technology for digital photography, especially in the consumer area, was stark. Rick Braddock, a Kodak director since 1987, whose career spans Wall Street, online retailing and private equity, recalls that "the mindset of the company was ready for the challenge: it was 'Batten down the hatches'. But the way the market shifted was dramatically faster than we had anticipated or than I'd ever seen". Eastman wrote that he wanted his business to be able to create "a rapid succession of changes and improvements "It was denial. So when the directors decided to oust Whitmore (who died in 2004), they belatedly took the opportunity to appoint a technology expert – George Fisher, who had earned plaudits as chief executive of Motorola, then riding high as one of the most innovative US electronics companies. Frank Sklarsky, who joined Kodak from outside the industry in 2006 and served as chief financial officer under Mr Pérez until moving to Tyco International in 2010, says: "Kodak's core competence was in chemistry-based, continuous flow manufacturing; the digital business is very different: product transitions are much quicker. According to former employees, however, Kodak had not been shirking its duty to look into the future. Meanwhile, Kodak also launched "hybrid" products such as the photo CD and the standalone Picture Maker retail photo-printing kiosk. 01 megapixel images. In 1979, the firm put together a graphic timeline laying out roughly when Kodak's clients would make the transition to digital imaging, starting with government clients, moving through graphic businesses and ending, in about 2010, with retail consumers. In 1991, the group drew up a digital strategy which led it three years later to develop a digital camera – though it kept its brand off the device – with Apple, the firm whose mould-breaking products would help accelerate the analogue decline a decade later. But while these efforts yielded several of the patents Mr Pérez believes could yet be Kodak's salvation, they sucked in investment for little return. Bob LaPerle, who led teams assessing the impact of digital technologies in the early 1990s, says the board missed an opportunity when it replaced chief executive Colby Chandler in 1990 with Kay Whitmore, a relatively conservative 33-year veteran of the group. The blind spot was not his downfall – indeed, another person near to the company at the time recalls discussing the electronic future with the board under Whitmore. |

When, one sunny weekend in July 2007, Eastman Kodak demolished Buildings 9 and 23 – disused facilities in "Kodak Park" near the US group's headquarters in Rochester, upstate New York – the local newspaper, the Democrat heir senior executives believed they had a duty to "maximise how much you might earn out of the traditional business". Antonio Pérez, Kodak's chief executive, likes to point out the irony of that scene to those who start lamenting the group's missed opportunities, or even accuse him of accelerating its decline. In January, overburdened with the legacy costs of its industrial past, Kodak filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Asked recently how he explained Kodak's decline, he said: "It was denial. The reaction of US strategy expert Gary Hamel, who in 1992 praised Kodak for creating "stored energy" for the future, is typical. The bigger question is why Kodak was unable, or unwilling, to jump on to the digital train – or at least dodge out of its path. A photographer who worked on his local newspaper for 40 years and was awarded an MBE for his services to the county has died from leukaemia at the age of 76. "He was at the frontline of press photography for a number of years and then came back as a freelance writer in retirement. "We worked with one another at the Lincolnshire Echo for something like 35 years and I used to marvel at his knowledge and achievements. He wrote a column for the Echo, then a daily titile, for ten years following his retirement in 1996, becoming known as the king of echo nostalgia. "He was a lovely fellow who was really popular around the city and he was hugely knowledgeable. Peter was made an MBE in the 2003 New Year Honours' list in recognition of his services to Lincolnshire. "Peter will be remembered with affection for years to come. Peter is survived by his wife Patricia, 69, daughters Sarah Washbourn, 36, a photographer at the Sheffield Star, and Jo-Ann Davey, 41, sons Martin, 47, Andrew, 46, and Ian, 44, and five grandchildren. Mike Sassi, editor of the Echo between 1999 and 2007, said: "As journalists we had the utmost respect for him. Patricia told the Echo that it was Peter's birthday on the Saturday before he died but he was so ill he couldn't open his cards. "Had I ever been a contestant on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and a question came up about Lincoln, he would have been my telephone a friend. The couple would have celebrated 50 years of marriage next September. "He was a great local historian and this was reflected in the many bygone articles and books he wrote for the Echo. Peter Brown, formerly the Echo's Gossiper columnist said: "Peter was one of the most dedicated and accomplished photographers I have ever known. In a tribute piece in the latest edition of the Echo, Peter is described by his son Martin as 'to Lincoln what David Attenborough is now to natural history. A funeral service will be held at noon on Monday 16 April at St Swithin's Church, St Swithin's Square, Lincoln, followed by Lincoln Crematorium at 1pm. |
