Inside Glenn Danzig's Photographer Beef at Bonnaroo

Security had to physically hold Glenn Danzig back from attacking photographers at Bonnaroo on Saturday. " It wasn't long before they did. After a few minutes, Danzig returned to the stage to finish the show. You really aren't shooting him, are you?'" Bunch recalls.

"He was just pointing at me and screaming something about fucking up the show," Bunch recalls, "I was confused and amused by it, I guess, because I thought it was absolutely ridiculous . " Still seething, the singer reemerged to finish the show a few minutes later.

"I was told by someone that works for Bonnaroo that, essentially, we could shoot over on the side at our own risk," Bunch says.

"You know you cannot shoot Danzig, right?" Bunch says a Danzig crew member told him during the show. ' … I feel like it was really a theatrical thing.

Then, while performing "Dirty Black Summer," an obviously agitated Danzig flipped the bird at the media pool.

Said Danzig to the crowd before retreating to his trailer, "Try and have a good time.

Photographer Michael W. "Fuck 'em!" he was seen mouthing as he took a purpose-driven walk back to the stage.

International photographer supplies a summer exhibit at Stanmeyer Gallery in the Berkshires

International photographer supplies a summer exhibit at Stanmeyer Gallery in the Berkshires

As spring leafs out into summer and the landscape is transformed, it seems only natural for the Stanmeyer Gallery in West Otis, Mass.

Ten percent of the proceeds from gallery sales will support organizations working to conserve, preserve, protect and replenish the surroundings, including The Trustees of Reservations and the Berkshire Natural Resources Council.

"There will be images from all over the world hanging," Mr. He is a wood carver who only uses naturally fallen trees in his work.

The exhibit will also include images from Mr. … I can't do pretty pictures-I never could do them-but I do a lot of environmental work, and this exhibition is something that evolved from that work over the course of the last seven years.

"Trees and Vistas of Our World," he explained, "highlights poetic moments of our environment, with vistas of spirituality in India, fragments of solitude in Mexico, landscapes of war's aftermath in Afghanistan, and where trees come alive in non-manipulated movement of abstract images from Japan, southern France, Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Berkshires and elsewhere.

More than 25 limited-edition, signed and numbered photographs from the series, making their public debut, will be featured in "Fragile Landscapes: Trees and Vistas of Our World. … All of it verges on beauty, but not beauty for beauty's sake. There is a very interesting juxtaposition between my work and Ken's work as a realist sculptor. ". "My work usually consists of very hard images, social commentary. , home. There is an underlying message.

Also to be shown is a small collection of prints by Mr. There are verdant, wooded paths blanketed in a mysterious fog, and intense landscapes offset by sunsets of purple majesty.

It is an exhibition that examines nature's innate beauty, but also reveals the fragility of the Earth through the photographer's lens; there are, for example, images depicting the illegal fires that devastated the Amazon in 2008.

Photographers explore the South in High Museum exhibition

Photographers explore the South in High Museum exhibition

Atlanta's High Museum of Art invited three photographers to present their views of the American South, and the results - including slices of urban life, rural portraits and eroding marshlands - will be on display starting this weekend.

His images include portraits of a juke joint owner on his 70th birthday and of a man who carves guitars from driftwood, a flock of birds flying up from a field and a video of a man singing gospel in front of lace curtains in his home.

"Picturing New York" is a collection of 154 photographs from MoMA, including works by well-known artists such as Diane Arbus, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Cindy Sherman, Alfred Stieglitz, Weegee and several others. The exhibition is part of an ongoing, multi-exhibition collaboration between the High and MoMA that launched in 2009. For her commission she chose to travel to a community of about 85 people living on an eroding strip of land in Louisiana's coastal marshes where she has family roots. There are shots of Atlanta's zoo, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CNN Center and an exhibition opening at the High, along with people tailgating before a Braves baseball game, participating in the Atlanta Pride Festival and enjoying the annual Dogwood Festival. He also looks at the region's food with a cross section of a rainbow layered cake and a plate heavy with barbecue.

"Ordinary people and ordinary things, like the local supermarket, inspire me with the same passion that leads other photographers to go to war zones," Parr said. He traveled to places with musical significance and met with gospel singers and other musicians but didn't want his project to be a strict telling of the history of Southern music or its current state.

"The idea of this show is how photography and New York became modern together over the 20th century," said MoMA curator of photography Sarah Meister.

Finally, in "Revisiting the South: Richard Misrach's Cancer Alley," Misrach, one of the first photographers selected for "Picturing the South," shows 21 large-scale prints of photos he shot for his project, which explored the ecological degradation of a corridor of the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans that is home to many industrial plants and is sometimes referred to as Cancer Alley.

"The personal connections I made with people are what kept me coming back," she said.

Her gallery in the exhibition includes portraits of people, eroding landscapes and a video ofa shrimping trip. Alford sought to record the landscape and the individuals who cling to it.

As a journalist accustomed to moving from story to story and going where the action is, one of the toughest things was spending a significant amount of time in one place, she said.

Lavalette was born in Vermont and has always lived in the Northeast. " A related exhibition, "Revisiting the South: Richard Misrach's Cancer Alley," is also on view. The 76 prints will go on view Saturday alongside an exhibition from The Museum of Modern Art in New York called "Picturing New York.

The three photographers chosen for the latest installment of "Picturing the South" are British documentary photographer and photojournalist Martin Parr, who focuses on the urban setting of Atlanta; Dallas-based documentary photographer and photojournalist Kael Alford, who depicts small communities in eroding marshlands of Louisiana; and Vermont native Shane Lavalette, who chose to explore the relationship between traditional Southern music and the contemporary landscape.

Cornwall Photographer to Discuss Her Artistic 'Affliction' in Sharon Event Today

Cornwall Photographer to Discuss Her Artistic 'Affliction' in Sharon Event Today

"Photography is the affliction of my family," said Catherine Hanf Noren of Cornwall, as she stood before a display of cameras used by her family to record its history over more than a century.

All the photographs in the exhibit have been produced in the second millennium and are fine-art depictions of scenes and objects, but an autobiographical thread informs the work. Ms. " The show opened May 5 and continues through July 5. "I have taken objects from my family [for use in] some of these photographs," she said.

Walking a visitor through the exhibit this week, she pointed to two images of flowers-one the tracery of Queen Anne's Lace, the other a red splash of Angelica. Wallach, born in Westphalia in 1878, was a great lover of German folk art and founded the "Museum fuer Volkskunst" in Munich before fleeing Hitler's growing threat in 1938. After settling in Lime Rock he continued to produce textiles, including the examples that presaged the work of his granddaughter.

His textiles also seem eerily echoed in another image-this one of a vine-covered "Child at Play" sign that she reprinted in a half-dozen colors. "In my personal history, the lure of photography as a gateway to truth has been intense for as long as I can remember," she wrote in her artist's statement.

Ms. at the museum. Noren will present a Gallery Walk and Talk tomorrow (Saturday) at 3 p. Noren concluded at the end of a video based on her book about her family, "The past must be linked to the present if there is to be a future. Noren's own eye, created with the latest in digital technology.

Kodak files motion to auction digital imaging patents

Kodak files motion to auction digital imaging patents

Eastman Kodak has sought permission to auction off more than 1,100 of its patents in an effort to save the firm.

Recent lawsuits have driven up patent prices, but a ruling last month against one of Kodak's key innovations may cause uncertainty about its portfolio.

The motion was filed with the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

Kodak, which now specialises in printing equipment, said that 20 parties had already shown interest in the sale.

Samsung and LG had already paid $964m to use the technology and Kodak was attempting to force Apple and Research In Motion to follow.

The firm said it hoped to announce the winning bidder by 13 August.

"The bidding procedures are designed to allow bidders to give us their best offers without fear of showing their cards to competitors," said the firm's chief intellectual property officer, Timothy Lynch.

Kodak said it had generated more than $3bn (£1.

The other batch will incorporate tools for image manipulation, tagging and network-based services.

Kodak said that it intended to appeal against the decision.

One portfolio will incorporate about 700 patents covering image capture, processing and transmission technologies for digital cameras and other devices.

"In filing these proposed procedures in advance of the June 30 deadline in our lending agreement, we are moving ahead as soon as possible with the process of monetising our digital imaging patent portfolio.

Photographer turns hobby into thriving enterprise

Photographer turns hobby into thriving enterprise

Johnna Bowker took her daughter to Wal-Mart on her second birthday for professional and affordable photos.

Bowker specializes in family, senior and baby portraits.

She decided when she started her photography business in February 2008 that she would provide affordable photography. Her favorite aspect of her work, she said, is the creativity involved with each shoot.

"With children, what I love is that you never know what to expect," Bowker said.

Her father was a photographer and Bowker found a love for photography through him, playing with his Pintek SLR camera as a child.

"He always had a camera around," she said.

Bowker said she kept this motto when she started her business during the nation's economic downturn. "I know the photos I have of myself, my kids, my grandpa and my dad, I will cherish.

"It just seemed the right time," Bowker said.

Then Bowker picked up her camera and started to practice her photography skills.

Now, her children are 5 and 7 years old and her 7-year-old daughter has asked to help her with photo shoots.

"I totally love what I do," Bowker said. Bowker said her competitive rates have surprised many clients.

"I run into the fact that because my prices are so low than most other photographers I get the, 'Are you for real?' They don't see me as taking myself as seriously, but I do," Bowker said.

"I faced the challenges of trying to juggle (being a housewife and mother) and keep up with the trends because photography is ever-changing," Bowker said.

"That's when I thought, 'I can probably be doing better than this,'" Bowker said.

At the same time she started her business, her husband was pursuing a college education and she had two young children.

Christian Photographers Can't Ignore Gay Clients

Christian Photographers Can't Ignore Gay Clients

A Christian-owned photography studio violated anti-discrimination laws by refusing to take pictures for a gay couple's commitment ceremony, the New Mexico Court of Appeals ruled.

Elane Photography had argued that the First Amendment and New Mexico's Religious Freedom Restoration Act empowered it to refuse service.

"Elane Photography avoids addressing the critical factor that a photography business does offer its goods or services to the general public as part of modern commercial activity," Judge Timothy Garcia wrote for the court. " The studio claimed that it did not discriminate, but that its policy and the beliefs of its owners prevent it from photographing a marriage that defines it as anything other than between a man and a woman.

"Willock isn't included in the definition of a 'government agency' under the NMRFRA, and this statute was not meant to apply in suits between private litigants," Garcia wrote.

The New Mexico Human Rights Act expansively defines a public accommodation as any establishment which provides or offers its services, facilities, accommodations or goods to the public, according to the court.

A judge with Bernalillo County District Court rejected Elane's appeal, leading the studio to take its case to the Court of Appeals.

Head photographer Elaine Huguenin owns the studio with her husband Jonathan.

When Willock's partner sent Elane an email the next day without disclosing her sexual orientation, she received a response with pricing information and an offer to meet.

Though the state law may provide broader protection, Wechsler disagreed that it would have violated Elane's rights to make it attend Willock's ceremony. "Nothing in the facts indicates that when Elane Photography declined the job Elaine knew that there was any religious aspect to the ceremony she was asked to attend.

Though the 2nd Circuit held in 2006 that the federal version of the statute applied to a suit between two private parties, the judges said they "could not find a single court holding that supported its novel application.

In a separate concurring opinion, Judge James Wechsler also addressed the difference between New Mexico and federal human rights laws.

"Elane Photography's owners are Christians who believe that marriage is a sacred union of one man and one woman," the opinion states.

The commission ultimately found that this conduct violated state anti-discrimination laws and that Elane owed Willock more than $6,600 in attorneys' fees.

Elane also misapplied the meaning of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, according to the panel, which noted that it is clearly limited in scope to when a government agency has restricted a person's freedom of religion.

Garcia countered, however, that the studio showcased its discriminatory policy in its separate emails with Willock and her partner.

Football photographer Mark is top of the Premier League

Football photographer Mark is top of the Premier League

A WEEK is a long time in politics - and can feel even longer in football - so 20 years of Premier League action must seem like an eon.

"It is great to get that type of recognition from your peers.

On May 31 he was honoured for his work at the front line of football photography when he was named Barclays Photographer of the 20 Seasons.

"All the guys from the nationals came up to me and congratulated me, saying 'you deserve it'.

Although Mark left school with two O-levels and no formal training in photography, he gradually made inroads into the profession after buying "bits of cameras" and getting out in the field.

Among the shots which caught the judges' attention was one Mark snapped of Brian Clough, notorious manager of Nottingham Forest, leaving the pitch after his final match at the club.

Mark, who is a photographer with Offside Sports, was awarded an official Barclays award and £10,000 of photographic equipment.

He says that was the way of 1970s photographers asking for someone else to "stick their hands in hazardous chemicals".

"It means everything to me," Mark told the Gazette.

The 55-year-old said: "It all really came out of my passion for football.

Mark, of Winchmore Hill, got his lucky break after replying to a jobcentre advertisement searching for a photographer's assistant.

Although Mark did not think it was a great shot at the time, he admits: "It's in the eye of the beholder.

Mark Leech began his career "putting his hands in hazardous chemicals" in 1973 - when the top flight of football was still called Division 1. ".

"With Brian Clough, I think it made an impression because he was a special guy and it was the first-ever season of the Premier League.

His work will be on display as part of the Barclays Premier League 20 Seasons photography exhibition on June 18 and 19 in the Century Club in Shaftesbury Avenue, central London.

All about Ararchy / Prolific photographer's 450

All about Ararchy / Prolific photographer's 450

Nobuyoshi Araki, 72, is arguably one of the most prolific photographers in the world.

One of the books, Shakyo Rojin Nikki (Diary of a crazy old shutterbug), was published by Wides Shuppan publishing.

For the collection, Araki took photos of himself right after the quake.

But, enthusiastic as ever, he quickly added: "I'm now very confident in taking photos, you know.

Another exhibition of Araki's work is presently showing at the Taka Ishii Gallery in Koto Ward, Tokyo. He deliberately damaged the negatives with scissors to give the prints an unexpected look.

"Photos are images [of subjects].

At the exhibition, a collection of 70 new color photos, titled '11 3 .

Flowers, blue skies and dolls are shown in these pictures.

Moreover to published works, the exhibition includes privately printed books, such as Xerox Shashin-cho (Xerox photo book), a rare 23-volume photo collection printed on a copy machine in 1970 when he was an employee of ad agency Dentsu Inc.

Handmade scrapbooks put together in the 1960s are also on display.

Araki said he became highly productive around the 1980s, when he published about 10 books a year, but he had never seen all of the collections displayed in one place.

"I vaguely knew I'd published that many, but seeing them displayed together is just terrific," he said with emotion. It's my new start.

He added in a modest tone of voice: "I've convinced people that each one of my photos is a short novel.

Araki said that human relations created in the manufacturing of his collections are also an important element.

Araki is also known as "Ararchy," a portmanteau of his name and "anarchy.

Araki's photos impressively depict life, death and sex in daily life in a subjective style called "shi-shashin.

Araki's strong feelings toward his photos' subjects can best be viewed in Senchimentaru na Tabi (Sentimental Journey), a shi-shashin collection about his marriage with his late wife, Yoko, that was published in 1971, and Itoshi no Chiro (Chiro, My Love), which was published in 1990 to express his deep feelings for his cat. The exhibition has made me feel like doing something new, indeed.

For example, he has been involved with a project to send photos of flowers to temporary housing facilities in the region.

Each shot 'is my last'

In 2009, he announced that he had cancer.

Last year, he published two black-and-white collections inspired by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

He rather expresses his sympathy for the people of the region in a reserved way.

"Each time I click the shutter, I think it's my last," he said.

2012 Guernsey Photography Festival channelling good photography

2012 Guernsey Photography Festival channelling good photography

Held from 24 May - 22 June this year, the Guernsey Photography Festival is now in its third year and remains a promising presence on the European photography festival circuit. "What I see, what I encounter, is completely open," he says. The colour and black-and-white images looked great in the space, and the mosaic-like grid of colour images on the far wall was a particular highlight for me.

With few dedicated exhibition spaces on the island the challenge for the organisers is to find and transform suitable spaces, with the festival exhibiting work both indoors in disused shops and outside in the gardens of Priaulx Library and Market Square.

Another successful exhibition was by Agence VU's Bruno Boudjelal, collecting images from 1993 on documenting his journeys to his father's native Algeria. I want to produce a festival that is as honest as possible and of the highest quality. In many of the images people are photographed uncomfortably close, often in motion with blurred faces, creating a highly charged and moving body of work. The Shipping Forecast is more traditional, comprising around 25 black-and-white images that were beautifully framed and presented at Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery complete with Radio 4 soundbites. "There are no boundaries. There were seven big name photographers this year including Mark Power, whose two exhibitions The Shipping Forecast and The Sound of Two Songs were exhibited together for the first time and, for me, the standouts of the festival.

The Sound of Two Songs was shot in Poland over a five-year period, and is a poetic and personal response to the landscapes and people Power encountered.

By contrast Ricardo Cases' project Paloma Al Air, which depicts the Spanish practice of pigeon racing, was a riot of colour. Dewi Lewis published the book last year, and he was also on hand to give an insightful talk about the photography publishing industry. The exhibition was topped off by another great sea view across Candie Gardens on leaving the museum and there was a nod to the Queen's Jubilee with a sequence of prints along a nearby footpath showing the Queen on various visits to Guernsey through the years. " The brooding black-and-white images commanded attention and the central location meant many people were able to stop and take a look; on the downside they seemed a little out of place in the colourful market place. "My aim is to show different styles of photography presented in interesting ways.

French-Slovenian photographer Klavdij Sluban's work was shown in centre of the Market Square.

Cases was also in Guernsey to talk about his work, showing images from another series on hunting in Spain alongside presentations by Anastasia Taylor-Lind and Ivor Prickett at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts on 26 May.

Ivor Prickett, who is exhibiting Days of Anger, a series of images taken during the last days of President Mubarak, also gave an interesting presentation.

Anastasia Taylor-Lind showed a brilliant slideshow the same evening, produced by Panos' Anna Stevens, helped place her Siberian Supermodels series in context, something I felt was missing from her exhibition at Liberation Monument in St Peter Port. What is important is to create your own path.

Photographers on Photography: The D-Day Landing and Robert Capa's Slightly Out of Focus Legacy

Photographers on Photography: The D-Day Landing and Robert Capa's Slightly Out of Focus Legacy

"It's not easy always to stand aside and be unable to do anything except record the suffering around one.

"The rip tide hit my body and every wave slapped my face under my helmet.

In his short life, Robert Capa covered five wars and when he died in 1954, he was in the combat zone covering the end of the France's war in Indochina; a war that was soon to become America's.

Capa had first photographed war in 1936 when he, like Ernest Hemingway and so many others, was drawn to the Spanish Civil War, the first conflict with European fascism. While there has been some controversy over its authenticity, few deny its impact. My friend Milt Felsen was an ambulance driver in Spain with the volunteers of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.

"I crawled on my stomach over to my friend Larry the Irish padre of the regiment…hell he growled…comforted by religion, I took out my Contax camera and began to shoot without raising my head. ".

Over Capa's head, a fresh faced kid from Brooklyn jumped into the flack-filled, cloud-muddied skies. He made it to the ground, fought his way halfway to Berlin and returned home safely. The faulty drying too had somehow added a special quality to them, one that lifts them out of that specific time and place, making them universal images of war.

Sixty-eight years ago, on June 6, 1944, the Hungarian born photographer Robert Capa waded ashore on the beaches of Normandy with two Contax cameras wrapped in oilskins tucked into the folds of his jacket.

"It was still very early and very gray for good pictures, but the gray water and the gray sky made the men, dodging under the surrealistic designs of Hitler's anti-invasion brain trust, very effective.

That D-Day morning he was close enough.

"The water was cold and the beach still a hundred yards away. A soldier got there at the same time, and for a few minutes we shared its cover. But when I'd meet him in Madrid, he was always dressed to the nines and I never saw him without a pretty mam'selle on his arm. He was a good man.

Capa famously said that, "If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough. Making his way across the bloody deck, he reached the engine room and dried his hands by the engine's warmth. After putting his film in a press bag and sending it by courier for processing, he changed his clothes and returned to the beaches of Normandy on the first available boat.

A week later, he learned that the images he had taken were considered the best images anyone had made of the invasion.

Many publications added a caption to these photos, to explain to readers why they were blurred and slightly out of focus.

. Out of the one hundred and six images Capa had taken only eight survived. I reached into my bag for a brand new roll, and my wet, shaking hands ruined the roll before I could insert it in my camera.

"I paused for a moment…and then I had it bad.

Capa reached the landing craft, but as he hauled himself on board, there was an explosion that covered him in blood and feathers.

Yet, when those few photos were published around the world, they caused a sensation.

VII Photo adds four photographers to Mentor programme

The VII Mentor Program was launched three years ago to help young and emerging photographers build and polish the necessary skills to expand their professional practice. He believes that his youth and curiosity drive him to pick up themes which are easily and often overlooked.

El-Tantawy, which was featured in BJP last year, splits her time between London and Cairo, where she has been extensively working since the revolution.

"Between 2008-2009 she covered the Midwest region of the United States focusing on local politics, the financial crisis and social issues with The New York Times as a primary client," says VII.

Franko, who's based in Slovenia, will be mentored by Christopher Morris.

The four photographers will join Giovanni Cocco, Mikolaj Nowacki and Sim Chi Yin, who were selected for the VII Mentor Program last year.

Franko, a documentary photographer born in Slovenia in 1993, has explored domestic and international social issues, "often touching on the loss of traditional values in the modern world," says VII in a statement. She will be mentored by VII Photo member Ed Kashi. Ahmed, who will be mentored by John Stanmeyer, "feels compelled to use photography to document the constant changes and impact the collective state of mind of the people," says the agency. In 2011 she was awarded a Fulbright fellowship in photography to return to Azerbaijan.

Rivkin will be mentored by Ron Haviv. She started her career as a print journalism intern at the Associated Press in Madrid in 2007, and later spent time developing several photography projects in Ethiopia and her hometown of Chicago. from Pathshala, the South Asian Media Academy, with his final semester conducted abroad at the Danish School of Media and Journalism. "VII will even like to take this opportunity to wish photographers Peter DiCampo, Erin Trieb and Tanyth Berkeley great success in the future following their completion of the Mentor Program," says a VII spokesman.

Christian Photographers, Lawyers to Appeal Decision Forcing Gay Marriage Services

Christian Photographers, Lawyers to Appeal Decision Forcing Gay Marriage Services

A New Mexico court has upheld a ruling that it is illegal for Christian photographers to refuse their services to same-sex couples because of their faith, arguing that it would be discriminating against a person's sexual orientation.

Lorence of the ADF then appealed the verdict to the New Mexico Court of Appeals, and on May 31 the appeals court upheld the original decision of the commission.

Neither same-sex marriage nor civil unions between couples of the same sex are legal in New Mexico.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council also weighed in on the court's decision, writing in a recent newsletter that he sees this case involving a same-sex couple as part of a bigger trend against Christians.

The couple was ordered to pay $6,637 to Willock's attorney for services.

"Americans in the marketplace should not be subjected to legal attacks for simply abiding by their beliefs," said Attorney and ADF Senior Counsel Jordan Lorence in a June 4 press release.

"Unfortunately, this is just a snapshot of what's happening around the country in business, sports, Hollywood, and schools," he writes.

In 2008, the commission found the Huguenins guilty of sexual discrimination as found in the state's Human Rights Act, which states places of public accommodation may not partake in discrimination based on sexual orientation.

"Should the government force a videographer who is an animal rights activist to produce a video promoting hunting and taxidermy? Of course not, and neither should the government force this photographer to promote a message that violates her conscience.

According to court documents, Elaine Huguenin said she and her husband refused to photograph the ceremony because their beliefs were in conflict with the purpose of the ceremony.

The ADF, a Christian legal alliance group, believes the court's verdict in this case sends a clear message that: "you will be punished if you do not fully endorse or promote the homosexual agenda, whether you agree with it or not.

"The message a same-sex commitment ceremony communicates isn't one I believe," Hugeunin has said.

The Willock v.

Willock ultimately chose a different photographer for her ceremony, but filed a discrimination complaint against the company with the New Mexico Human Rights Commission. " .

Photographer Sees Self as Storyteller

Photographer Sees Self as Storyteller

Still: I've always been interested in photography. That's when the magic happens. That's when I started getting serious, taking classes, investing in equipment and then eventually opening my business. Right now it is just a part-time gig, as part-time as owning a business can be.

Still: Up until this point my core business has been maternity, newborns and families. But I know I will always come back to people. I was more of a memory keeper than anything up until my children were born, though. They also understand lighting, angles and composition. I think more and more people today recognize the valuation of professional photography, and while a consumer-grade camera can take a great picture today, professionals invest tens of thousands of dollars in equipment, even more on training and spend hours editing. But thanks to social media, the Internet and just old-fashioned beating the streets and meeting people, I'm starting to build my Florida client base. Maybe they are a mom who spends all day taking care of her little ones, or a business woman who is constantly on the go, and for those couple of hours you get to make it all about her. You get to make her feel as beautiful as she is.

Still: The same way I make any of my clients feel comfortable, whether they are pregnant, a shy 2-year-old or women in a boudoir session: I become friends with them first, find common ground, and if it comes down to it I'll start cracking terrible jokes that if they aren't laughing at the punch line at least they are laughing at how ridiculous I am.

Still: Absolutely, and I think that the rise in popularity of custom boudoir photography is just great. I never want to be happy with where I'm at with my photography, I always want to be better and grow as an artist. Every session I have I do a self-review and sometimes reach out to my circle of photographer friends for critique.

Still: I think the biggest motivator I ever got was in my first photography class. I've only had a few students over the years that I can say this to, and you are one of them, this might be your living.

Still: I think when you capture someone's essence that is when they appear their best. I aim for fresh, modern and natural poses, I try to show people just living and enjoying the moment or each other. I have boxes and boxes of photographs that I love to look through. I feel like photographs and songs are very much alike. Weddings are a whole new challenge and I have really enjoyed the experience. I was so nervous thinking this would be just like the time I was 8 and my tennis instructor told my mom and me after lessons one day that she should stop wasting her money. People are amazing to me and I love to capture individuality, uniqueness and emotion.

Still: I think anyone can take amazing photos because no matter what, a photograph is a memory; some of my favorite photos of my kids are iPhone pictures! . " . It was a huge box of Omaha steaks.

Tips For Choosing A Wedding Photographer

Tips For Choosing A Wedding Photographer

"A picture is worth a thousand words".

What's your style? Your favorite photography style depends on your personality. Another might simply include his time and materials, with everything else as an add-on. If you don't click with them, move on!.

Important Elements A good photographer will also recommend key elements to include in your photos. You may also want to ask if your photographer will be bringing an assistant or second shooter. For example: How many hours are included in the fee? With the cost, what are you receiving? Is there an image album? How many photos do you get? Can you keep the proofs? Be sure to ask to see samples of these albums along with references. One might include time, materials, proofs in an album, custom prints in a custom album, and enlargements.

Personality Regardless of how talented a photographer is, it is very important to have a good relationship with them; it is always a good idea to meet beforehand and chat and see if the "mutual chemistry" is right. It is important to take a moment and judge the quality of the pictures in their portfolio: Are they well-lit pictures? How good is the resolution? Can you feel the love through the pictures? All of these are crucial.

Good Vision You want to choose someone who will understand what you have in mind without the need of too much direction. The great thing about having another photographer is that it allows for a different angle of all the pictures. At a recent wedding I coordinated my client had a guest list of forty and they splurged on a photographer they felt would capture all of the personal details. You can never do too much homework! Do you like photos that look vintage or a little more artistic? Are classic or formal photos more your style? Some photographers specialize in all black-and-white images and some specialize in taking full color shots. Fine tune your contract so there are no surprises on your big day! It's also a good idea to ask how long it will take to get your proofs and your finished album back so you'll know when you can always expect everything. There is nothing like looking back at your photographs and being able to re-live your big day.

Customize your Package Once you narrow it down to three photographers, set up a meeting to talk about the services offered.

The Falcon Flyer: Following her Dreams in the Photography World

It's a dream come true for one of our fellow students at Briar Woods High School.

"It's difficult choosing careers but if I don't do photography then I want to do something in marketing or communications," says Barnett.

Around middle school was the time where Alexis Barnett first started loving photography, though she didn't see herself as brilliant she saw herself as creative. " "Photography is something I love but just like many others I'm still deciding if this is something I'm going to be doing as a career, if not then it will be a hobby for me," says Barnett.

As Barnett takes this pre-college program she will earn college credits which she hopes can make her stand out when she actually applies for NYU, her dream school.

"Over the past few years I think I have really designed a "voice" or style that shows in all my photos and reflects my personality greatly," says Barnett.

It's always important to have a plan B in life if plan A doesn't work out.

"I'm nervous to live in New York City without having my parents around," says Barnett.

"I'm happy that she got in and this is a great opportunity for her.

Google unveils three dimensional cities in Google Earth and offline Google Maps for Android

Google unveils three dimensional cities in Google Earth and offline Google Maps for Android

Google has announced several new features for its mapping services, including 3D cityscapes in Google Earth, and an offline mode for its Google Maps Android application.

"We're perhaps getting to the point where every map is unique for every individual for their particular task," said Parsons.

Parsons says it's one of the most-demanded features from Google Maps users.

The cityscapes will be introduced initially into the Google Earth apps for Android and iOS, with the desktop version getting them at a later point.

Meanwhile, an initiative called Google Street View Trekker will send rucksack-toting Googlers off to photograph places that aren't accessible to Street View cars, trikes and snowmobiles, while Google is expanding its Map Maker tool to 12 new countries for people to help enhance the accuracy of its maps - although this doesn't include the UK yet.

Some big announcements, just days before WWDC.

"It's covering a number of things that we've been doing, and maybe haven't talked about as much as we should have done," said Ed Parsons, geospatial technologist at Google, in an interview with The Guardian.

From cars to tricycles to rucksacks.

Google's announcements today play into a wider picture of how digital maps are evolving: the interconnection between the actual mapping data - 3D images included - and all the other data and content floating about in the cloud with location tags.

How to make sense of that, and produce useful maps that also serve up whatever information and/or content is relevant to that particular person at that particular time?

"For cartography, it's never been what you include on the map, but what you take off that's important," said Parsons.

"Up Snowdon, down the Grand Canyon, out into the wilds of England, Scotland and Wales… We can take people to places they wouldn't visit," said Parsons. Increasingly, mapping will be more and more three dimensional both online, and on mobile devices.

It's notable that the latter are getting the new 3 D feature first: a sign of Google's priorities when it comes to rolling out new mapping functionality across Google Maps and Google Earth.

"We think mapping and geographical information is probably most useful when you're mobile," said Parsons.

Why, though? three dimensional cities might look pretty, but what are the actual advantages to this kind of technology besides swooping virtually over San Francisco or London to show off a smartphone or tablet?

"Behind the scenes, this is very valuable for future applications like augmented reality," said Parsons.

"It gives you the ability to attach information to objects in three dimensions.

Its launch could also encourage more Android users to download the standalone Google Maps app from the Google Play store, rather than wait for their operator / handset maker to push out an update to the Android OS (and thus its embedded maps app).

All of this begs the question: what about iOS? All concerned at Google are playing a straight bat, as you'd imagine.

"The maps application on iOS has always been developed by Apple, who made use of our mapping tiles in the background," said Parsons. "The largest consumers of map data in the future will be mobile.

Those priorities are also reflected in the offline Google Maps for Android announcement, which means people will be able to download the map for a specific city or area before travelling there, and save on data usage/costs when they arrive.

Amid the interest in the 3D Google Earth cities and offline Android maps, the Street View Trekker news risks getting sidelined, but it's noteworthy too.

McClendon was equally diplomatic on iOS: "It's a fantastic platform and we see it as one of the many devices that we'd like to provide Google Maps on.

Of course, Google could launch a standalone Google Maps app for iOS, just as it has on Android. Now it can be squeezed into a rucksack, enabling Googlers to explore areas on foot (think canyons, mountains, national parks…) and capture them for Street View too.

Photography Show 'Looks East'

All bring their own unique style and perspective. These photographers are Heidi Lender and Olivier Borson, who have exhibited previously at the Open Shutter, Julie Billings, Jon Kaplan and Rodrigo Frota.

Steve McCurry is credited as having taken the 'worlds most recognizable photo' of a young Afghan girl refugee in 1985, and then 17 years later defying odds and finding her again in remote Afghanistan. McCurry's images span the globe, documenting varying ethnicities and significant cultural icons.

Two local photographers, Brandon Donahue, manager of the Open Shutter Gallery and Suzi McGregor joined McCurry on a photographic expedition in Rajasthan and will be exhibiting their work. Human Rights Watch: ?Unreported Stories? Photo Exhibit

Human Rights Watch: ?Unreported Stories? Photo Exhibit

Human Rights Watch will present a photography exhibition, ?Unreported Stories,? with the award-winning photographer Brent Stirton of Reportage by Getty Images.

"Stirton's arresting images gave Human Rights Watch the extraordinary opportunity to show the human faces behind our reports of abuse," said Veronica Matushaj, director of photography and video at Human Rights Watch.

Stirton's career history as an investigative photographer, committed to in depth work on critical issues related to the environment, natural resources, conflict, and health, has made him an exceptional partner for Human Rights Watch. The joint effort on the Porgera gold mine, published in an online multimedia report, "Gold's Costly Dividend,"won a Peabody Award for excellence in electronic media in April 2012.

Stirton joined forces with Human Rights Watch to uncover two hidden human rights stories. The other explored the lack of justice for abuses committed during a little-known conflict between a local militia and state security forces in Kenya's Mt. Elgon region. His work on HIV/AIDS in the Ukraine drew renewed attention to an increasingly neglected crisis.

Stirton was also recognized in 2012 with two World Press Photo Awards.

The exhibit will be in the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery in the Walter Reade Theater, 165 West 65th Street, plaza level, between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues.

Inside the stunning waves of Hawaii: Pair of photographers capture the setting ...

These incredible pictures capture the stunning moment waves roll on to a tropical beach.

Their only equipment are standard cameras - but a waterproof case means they do not need to sacrifice their cameras for their art.

'Fortunately it paid off this time and we managed to get a brilliant set of images.

Nick was born in Lake Stevens, Washington, and says he always had an appreciation for Nature and that his purpose in life is: 'To capture Mother Nature's beauty and light in the most unique way possible.

He spent his days in the surf and outdoors exploring the beauty of nature and learned early on that he had a love for the outdoors and a passion for photography.

CJ, from Hawaii, said: 'It's such a beautiful island - all of the different colours seemed to be replicated in the water while we were snapping away.

Photographers Nick Selway, 28, and pal CJ Kale, 35, position themselves in the magnificent Hawaiian water - and then wait for the waves to crash into their heads.

'We spend most of our time in the water photographing, but to get these types of shows is not easy and it takes a lot of patience to get it right.

CJ Kale is no stranger to the area, raised in Hawaii on the Waianae coast.

The pair also love photographing active volcanoes, and often risk their lives for that perfect shot.

Award-winning underwater photographers share their love of seas

Award-winning underwater photographers share their love of seas

Fewer still, you'd imagine, are willing to do that while worrying about running out of air, dicing with strong currents - and the odd predator passing by trying to find a quick bite.

"I saved my friend from a sea snake going right up his shorts,"?he says.

"When I pointed down, he almost had a heart attack.

"I got a shot of a scorpion fish yawning that I actually waited an hour for - watching him, concentrating on my breathing - while he was

staring me out.

"It's about so more than simply getting your composition right. It might have been a lot more nasty," recalls Clayton, adding that they were able to carefully coax the venomous critter out before he took a bite.

"You've got to think about buoyancy, you have the current to deal with then you have got to deal with things like whip corals.

"I got 'narced' a little from being down too long and holding my breath," he says referring to nitrogen narcosis, the feeling of being drunk or lightheaded that is brought about by nitrogen entering the bloodstream at higher than atmospheric pressure.

Apart from getting the opportunity to explore an alien world and capture breathtaking imagery, the sub-aqua documenters hope their work will serve a greater purpose - revealing the beauty of sea life that is so desperately in need of protection, in the UAE and across the globe.

"He just would not yawn and when he eventually did I had cut the corner out of the shot and I didn't realise until I saw the photo topside.

Jonathan Clayton (pictured), who captured the prize for best amateur photographer at the fourth annual awards, admits that his commitment to getting the perfect shot has seen him gamble with his safety.

"Dubai's coast was destroyed quite a long time ago when they started dredging for The World and the Palms," says Clayton.

"The other big problem here is shark finning (removing shark fins and discarding the rest of the body).

"I spotted this sea snake starting to go up his shorts leg, so I had to very carefully lift him up.

"Quite often we can come back from a dive from Musandam, or on the East Coast, where you may not have seen any sharks and coming back in to the harbour the only sharks that you have seen are those ones left there dead on the jetty.

A young photographer's first job proved to be his crowning moment

Charles Henry Wilson's first day as a photographer was his biggest - taking pictures of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation.

"For her to be now celebrating her diamond jubilee is an amazing achievement.

Six decades later, Mr Wilson, visiting the UAE to stay with his daughter in Dubai, is still proud of his photographs of history in the making.

"They were looking for someone to replace the outgoing photographer so I applied for the job," he said.

One of his shots shows the queen in her carriage and Winston Churchill, then the prime minister, in his coach.

Another photograph shows the new queen wearing her crown and waving to people from inside her coach.

Mr Wilson took pictures on his own Kodak plate camera.

Mr Wilson, from the port town of Blyth, Northumberland, had accompanied the man he was hoping to replace to the War Office in London the night before the wedding day.

"We slept there and at around 5am the following day we headed out," he said.

"The other photographer went to the roof with a telephoto lens and I made my way down to the front of Admiralty Arch.

Mr Wilson continued to work as a photographer with the army - he photographed boxing matches, officer groups and even an archaeological dig - before he moved into the private sector, where he ended his career taking wedding pictures.

"I had an armband with press written on it which made it easier for me to get access to where the photographers were.

"The coronation was the only topic of conversation for people in the country that day and it seemed as if everybody was celebrating.

"The crowds were getting pretty big but I made my way through in my civvies [civilian clothes].

"I think they really wanted to see what I could do so my first assignment was the coronation.

Although not dressed in his army uniform on the day, Mr Wilson, who had only recently completed his basic training, credits a press armband he was wearing for allowing him up-close access to the action.

"The place was full of cinematographers in contrast to stills photographers like myself," he said.
