LOOK3 salutes the dean of underwater photographers

The turquoise-blue water in which David Doubilet was bobbing was so cold it would burn like fire if it touched bare skin.

The list of past TREES artists reads like a who's who in the world of photography - Nichols, Steve Winters, George Steinmetz, Flip Nicklin, Thomas D. In a relatively short period of time, this exceptional display has become a treasured mark of achievement among photography's elite.

"It's a wonderful honor to have my work exhibited in the trees in Charlottesville," said Doubilet, who works with his wife, Jennifer Hayes, an aquatic biologist and photojournalist.

"The hardest thing in photography is finding a window to show people what you do, and this is one of the most wonderful windows in the world.

Nichols, an internationally respected wildlife photographer for National Geographic, often has likened the festival to a tribal gathering.

"But the real problem with diving is human error.

A festival tradition is celebrating the career of the TREES artist on the evening before the festival officially opens. Wednesday at the Paramount Theater, LOOK3 presents "Under Exposed: David Doubilet.

This year's Insight artists include Doubilet, Alex Webb, Donna Ferrato and Stanley Greene. Thursday at the Paramount Theater. Donna Ferrato will do the same at 4 p. Friday, and Alex Webb will be in the interview seat at 4 p. Saturday.

Doubilet has worked in some of the most dangerous waters of the world.

"I've been out of the cage with a great white shark, pushing it away with a camera housing," Doubilet said.

"Once an outrigger weight missed me by inches.

"Alex Webb, more than any color photographer, has influenced the way people see today. ".

Doubilet has been capturing remarkable photographs for additional than 50 years.

"We found a perfect iceberg with a mixture of gentoo and chinstrap penguins that were battling for the king of the hill of the iceberg.

"For some reason, when you're underwater, asthma doesn't seem to be much of a problem, so it was the perfect medium for me.

"As a compliment to David, I never think of what he is going through to make these pictures," Nichols said.
