| Nokia 808 PureView review: A photographer's perspective When I first heard about the Nokia 808 PureView and its seemingly impossible 41-megapixel camera I was, to say the least, somewhat sceptical. In terms of performance it's not at all bad; from the phone's homescreen a press of the shutter button on the side of the case switches on the camera in approximately 1. The contrast detection autofocus system is fast enough in good light, and it has an LED lamp that helps at close range in low light, although at longer ranges it doesn't focus at all well once light gets below late evening levels. In fact, the 808's biggest limitation as a camera is the fact that it's in a mobile phone. Most compact cameras use 1/2. 2in chip measuring 10. 67 x 8. 44 x 5. 58mm, an area of 43. 4mm2. 2in, or in real terms approximately 4. Advanced compacts such as the Canon G12 use a 1/1. 42mm, with a surface area of 15. But then the 808 can also produce full-resolution images of 38 megapixels in 4:3 aspect ratio, or 36MP in 16:9, which is quite a party trick, and we'll be taking a look at these later. Another technological breakthrough that makes this larger sensor design possible is the 808's high quality Carl Zeiss lens, which was specially developed to match the sensor. By using a non-zoom, fixed aperture lens designed specifically to match this sensor, the camera unit on the 808 has the ability to remain relatively small, although it does still make quite a bulge on the back of the phone. The fact that it actually has a shutter button immediately puts it a couple of rungs further up the quality ladder than most mobile phones. The Nokia 808 PureView uses an even larger sensor than that; it's a 1/1. 33mm2. In other words, its sensor has nearly double the surface area of an advanced compact, and over five times the surface area of a typical telephone camera sensor. 00mm, with a surface area of 85. The lack of optical zoom is something of a limitation, but the 808 does offer a "lossless" digital zoom, adjusting the pixel oversampling to compensate for the cropping of the image and retaining much the same quality. In this mode the colour rendition is very good, with bright vibrant hues in good light, and plenty of fine detail, but it's really still not any better than a good 8-10-megapixel compact camera. It also suffers from a perennial problem of phone cameras. The level of detail at the full-resolution 38-megapixel setting (or 32 megapixels in 16:9 format) is undeniably impressive, showing up tiny details in the scene amazingly well. However that's not really the way the camera is intended to be used. Unless you remember to carry a lens cloth with you and clean it before every use you'll frequently find that a slight haze of reflected glare drastically reduces the quality of your pictures. It seems to have only centre-weighted metering, and even minor backlighting such as the sky will cause the foreground to be very under-exposed. 4, but it does have an optional neutral-density filter. It's awkward to hold it without accidentally touching the screen, which as I mentioned will move the focus point, and despite its relatively compact size it's difficult to shoot one-handed. Even the cheapest budget compact has better handling. 3in sensors, which typically measure 6. The problem of course is that it's a trade-off, and below a certain light level, with photocells that small it really doesn't matter how much you "oversample" them, they're still not very good at collecting light. Most compact cameras also have a better list of features. One area where the sensor does score fairly well is in dynamic range. In full resolution mode however the dynamic range is, not surprisingly, extremely poor. |

Multi-award winning photographer Don Morley says two off-duty police officers adopted 'bully-boy' tactics when they stopped him, and a friend, in Guildford city centre, Surrey, on 27 June. Morley, a retired press photographer, said the pair had been capturing general street scenes that included a shot of two musicians and a picture of a boy taken through the window of a shop. More uniformed officers emerged at the top of the high street - making a total of six. Morley said the ordeal lasted for 1/2 an hour and took place in full view of shoppers: 'This is the first time I have been stopped by police since I started my career in 1957. The photographers gave police their names, when asked, but declined to provide their addresses. The photographers, who were not arrested, were only allowed to leave the area once police had reviewed their shots and satisfied themselves that none of the images were indecent. The pair say they were initially questioned for up to 20 minutes, during which time one of the officers located the family of the boy and appeared to talk to them about making a complaint. 'I was very disturbed by all this,' added Lockley. 'You would have thought we had robbed a bank or something. I don't want any of that on my computer. 'They more or less apologised but said they had been obliged to investigate. 'The uniformed police. Lockley, a former managing director of a building materials firm, told AP: 'We said we were in a public place - we didn't need permission. The incident, which took place close to Guildford High Street at lunchtime, was witnessed by a passing lawyer who berated the off-duty officers. 'He told them, in far better legalese, that they were not only completely out of order, but that it was also this type of bully-boy behaviour that was giving the police a bad name, and turning us into a police state,' Morley told AP. | Photographers explore the South in High Museum exhibition Atlanta's High Museum of Art invited three photographers to present their views of the American South, and the results - including slices of urban life, rural portraits and eroding marshlands - will be on display starting this weekend. His images include portraits of a juke joint owner on his 70th birthday and of a man who carves guitars from driftwood, a flock of birds flying up from a field and a video of a man singing gospel in front of lace curtains in his home. "Picturing New York" is a collection of 154 photographs from MoMA, including works by well-known artists such as Diane Arbus, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Cindy Sherman, Alfred Stieglitz, Weegee and several others. The exhibition is part of an ongoing, multi-exhibition collaboration between the High and MoMA that launched in 2009. For her commission she chose to travel to a community of about 85 people living on an eroding strip of land in Louisiana's coastal marshes where she has family roots. There are shots of Atlanta's zoo, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CNN Center and an exhibition opening at the High, along with people tailgating before a Braves baseball game, participating in the Atlanta Pride Festival and enjoying the annual Dogwood Festival. He also looks at the region's food with a cross section of a rainbow layered cake and a plate heavy with barbecue. "Ordinary people and ordinary things, like the local supermarket, inspire me with the same passion that leads other photographers to go to war zones," Parr said. He traveled to places with musical significance and met with gospel singers and other musicians but didn't want his project to be a strict telling of the history of Southern music or its current state. "The idea of this show is how photography and New York became modern together over the 20th century," said MoMA curator of photography Sarah Meister. Finally, in "Revisiting the South: Richard Misrach's Cancer Alley," Misrach, one of the first photographers selected for "Picturing the South," shows 21 large-scale prints of photos he shot for his project, which explored the ecological degradation of a corridor of the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans that is home to many industrial plants and is sometimes referred to as Cancer Alley. "The personal connections I made with people are what kept me coming back," she said. Her gallery in the exhibition includes portraits of people, eroding landscapes and a video ofa shrimping trip. Alford sought to record the landscape and the individuals who cling to it. As a journalist accustomed to moving from story to story and going where the action is, one of the toughest things was spending a significant amount of time in one place, she said. Lavalette was born in Vermont and has always lived in the Northeast. " A related exhibition, "Revisiting the South: Richard Misrach's Cancer Alley," is also on view. Johnna Bowker took her daughter to Wal-Mart on her second birthday for professional and affordable photos. Bowker specializes in family, senior and baby portraits. She decided when she started her photography business in February 2008 that she would provide affordable photography. Her favorite aspect of her work, she said, is the creativity involved with each shoot. "With children, what I love is that you never know what to expect," Bowker said. Her father was a photographer and Bowker found a love for photography through him, playing with his Pintek SLR camera as a child. "He always had a camera around," she said. Bowker said she kept this motto when she started her business during the nation's economic downturn. "I know the photos I have of myself, my kids, my grandpa and my dad, I will cherish. "It just seemed the right time," Bowker said. Then Bowker picked up her camera and started to practice her photography skills. Now, her children are 5 and 7 years old and her 7-year-old daughter has asked to help her with photo shoots. "I totally love what I do," Bowker said. Bowker said her competitive rates have surprised many clients. "I run into the fact that because my prices are so low than most other photographers I get the, 'Are you for real?' They don't see me as taking myself as seriously, but I do," Bowker said. "I faced the challenges of trying to juggle (being a housewife and mother) and keep up with the trends because photography is ever-changing," Bowker said. "That's when I thought, 'I can probably be doing better than this,'" Bowker said. | Christian Photographers Can't Ignore Gay Clients A Christian-owned photography studio violated anti-discrimination laws by refusing to take pictures for a gay couple's commitment ceremony, the New Mexico Court of Appeals ruled. Elane Photography had argued that the First Amendment and New Mexico's Religious Freedom Restoration Act empowered it to refuse service. "Elane Photography avoids addressing the critical factor that a photography business does offer its goods or services to the general public as part of modern commercial activity," Judge Timothy Garcia wrote for the court. " The studio claimed that it did not discriminate, but that its policy and the beliefs of its owners prevent it from photographing a marriage that defines it as anything other than between a man and a woman. "Willock isn't included in the definition of a 'government agency' under the NMRFRA, and this statute was not meant to apply in suits between private litigants," Garcia wrote. The New Mexico Human Rights Act expansively defines a public accommodation as any establishment which provides or offers its services, facilities, accommodations or goods to the public, according to the court. A judge with Bernalillo County District Court rejected Elane's appeal, leading the studio to take its case to the Court of Appeals. Head photographer Elaine Huguenin owns the studio with her husband Jonathan. When Willock's partner sent Elane an email the next day without disclosing her sexual orientation, she received a response with pricing information and an offer to meet. Though the state law may provide broader protection, Wechsler disagreed that it would have violated Elane's rights to make it attend Willock's ceremony. "Nothing in the facts indicates that when Elane Photography declined the job Elaine knew that there was any religious aspect to the ceremony she was asked to attend. Though the 2nd Circuit held in 2006 that the federal version of the statute applied to a suit between two private parties, the judges said they "could not find a single court holding that supported its novel application. In a separate concurring opinion, Judge James Wechsler also addressed the difference between New Mexico and federal human rights laws. "Elane Photography's owners are Christians who believe that marriage is a sacred union of one man and one woman," the opinion states. The commission ultimately found that this conduct violated state anti-discrimination laws and that Elane owed Willock more than $6,600 in attorneys' fees. Elane also misapplied the meaning of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, according to the panel, which noted that it is clearly limited in scope to when a government agency has restricted a person's freedom of religion. Garcia countered, however, that the studio showcased its discriminatory policy in its separate emails with Willock and her partner. |

On May 31 he was honoured for his work at the front line of football photography when he was named Barclays Photographer of the 20 Seasons. "All the guys from the nationals came up to me and congratulated me, saying 'you deserve it'. Although Mark left school with two O-levels and no formal training in photography, he gradually made inroads into the profession after buying "bits of cameras" and getting out in the field. Among the shots which caught the judges' attention was one Mark snapped of Brian Clough, notorious manager of Nottingham Forest, leaving the pitch after his final match at the club. Mark, who is a photographer with Offside Sports, was awarded an official Barclays award and £10,000 of photographic equipment. He says that was the way of 1970s photographers asking for someone else to "stick their hands in hazardous chemicals". "It means everything to me," Mark told the Gazette. The 55-year-old said: "It all really came out of my passion for football. Mark, of Winchmore Hill, got his lucky break after replying to a jobcentre advertisement searching for a photographer's assistant. Although Mark did not think it was a great shot at the time, he admits: "It's in the eye of the beholder. Mark Leech began his career "putting his hands in hazardous chemicals" in 1973 - when the top flight of football was still called Division 1. ". "With Brian Clough, I think it made an impression because he was a special guy and it was the first-ever season of the Premier League. Nobuyoshi Araki, 72, is arguably one of the most prolific photographers in the world. One of the books, Shakyo Rojin Nikki (Diary of a crazy old shutterbug), was published by Wides Shuppan publishing. For the collection, Araki took photos of himself right after the quake. But, enthusiastic as ever, he quickly added: "I'm now very confident in taking photos, you know. Another exhibition of Araki's work is presently showing at the Taka Ishii Gallery in Koto Ward, Tokyo. He deliberately damaged the negatives with scissors to give the prints an unexpected look. "Photos are images [of subjects]. At the exhibition, a collection of 70 new color photos, titled '11 3 . Flowers, blue skies and dolls are shown in these pictures. Moreover to published works, the exhibition includes privately printed books, such as Xerox Shashin-cho (Xerox photo book), a rare 23-volume photo collection printed on a copy machine in 1970 when he was an employee of ad agency Dentsu Inc. Handmade scrapbooks put together in the 1960s are also on display. Araki said he became highly productive around the 1980s, when he published about 10 books a year, but he had never seen all of the collections displayed in one place. "I vaguely knew I'd published that many, but seeing them displayed together is just terrific," he said with emotion. It's my new start. He added in a modest tone of voice: "I've convinced people that each one of my photos is a short novel. Araki said that human relations created in the manufacturing of his collections are also an important element. Araki is also known as "Ararchy," a portmanteau of his name and "anarchy. Araki's photos impressively depict life, death and sex in daily life in a subjective style called "shi-shashin. Araki's strong feelings toward his photos' subjects can best be viewed in Senchimentaru na Tabi (Sentimental Journey), a shi-shashin collection about his marriage with his late wife, Yoko, that was published in 1971, and Itoshi no Chiro (Chiro, My Love), which was published in 1990 to express his deep feelings for his cat. The exhibition has made me feel like doing something new, indeed. For example, he has been involved with a project to send photos of flowers to temporary housing facilities in the region. Each shot 'is my last' In 2009, he announced that he had cancer. Last year, he published two black-and-white collections inspired by the Great East Japan Earthquake. He rather expresses his sympathy for the people of the region in a reserved way. "Each time I click the shutter, I think it's my last," he said. |

| 2012 Guernsey Photography Festival channelling good photography Held from 24 May - 22 June this year, the Guernsey Photography Festival is now in its third year and remains a promising presence on the European photography festival circuit. "What I see, what I encounter, is completely open," he says. The colour and black-and-white images looked great in the space, and the mosaic-like grid of colour images on the far wall was a particular highlight for me. With few dedicated exhibition spaces on the island the challenge for the organisers is to find and transform suitable spaces, with the festival exhibiting work both indoors in disused shops and outside in the gardens of Priaulx Library and Market Square. Another successful exhibition was by Agence VU's Bruno Boudjelal, collecting images from 1993 on documenting his journeys to his father's native Algeria. I want to produce a festival that is as honest as possible and of the highest quality. In many of the images people are photographed uncomfortably close, often in motion with blurred faces, creating a highly charged and moving body of work. The Shipping Forecast is more traditional, comprising around 25 black-and-white images that were beautifully framed and presented at Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery complete with Radio 4 soundbites. "There are no boundaries. There were seven big name photographers this year including Mark Power, whose two exhibitions The Shipping Forecast and The Sound of Two Songs were exhibited together for the first time and, for me, the standouts of the festival. The Sound of Two Songs was shot in Poland over a five-year period, and is a poetic and personal response to the landscapes and people Power encountered. By contrast Ricardo Cases' project Paloma Al Air, which depicts the Spanish practice of pigeon racing, was a riot of colour. Dewi Lewis published the book last year, and he was also on hand to give an insightful talk about the photography publishing industry. The exhibition was topped off by another great sea view across Candie Gardens on leaving the museum and there was a nod to the Queen's Jubilee with a sequence of prints along a nearby footpath showing the Queen on various visits to Guernsey through the years. " The brooding black-and-white images commanded attention and the central location meant many people were able to stop and take a look; on the downside they seemed a little out of place in the colourful market place. "My aim is to show different styles of photography presented in interesting ways. French-Slovenian photographer Klavdij Sluban's work was shown in centre of the Market Square. Cases was also in Guernsey to talk about his work, showing images from another series on hunting in Spain alongside presentations by Anastasia Taylor-Lind and Ivor Prickett at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts on 26 May. Ivor Prickett, who is exhibiting Days of Anger, a series of images taken during the last days of President Mubarak, also gave an interesting presentation. Anastasia Taylor-Lind showed a brilliant slideshow the same evening, produced by Panos' Anna Stevens, helped place her Siberian Supermodels series in context, something I felt was missing from her exhibition at Liberation Monument in St Peter Port. | Photographers on Photography: The D-Day Landing and Robert Capa's Slightly Out of Focus Legacy "It's not easy always to stand aside and be unable to do anything except record the suffering around one. "The rip tide hit my body and every wave slapped my face under my helmet. In his short life, Robert Capa covered five wars and when he died in 1954, he was in the combat zone covering the end of the France's war in Indochina; a war that was soon to become America's. Capa had first photographed war in 1936 when he, like Ernest Hemingway and so many others, was drawn to the Spanish Civil War, the first conflict with European fascism. While there has been some controversy over its authenticity, few deny its impact. My friend Milt Felsen was an ambulance driver in Spain with the volunteers of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. "I crawled on my stomach over to my friend Larry the Irish padre of the regiment…hell he growled…comforted by religion, I took out my Contax camera and began to shoot without raising my head. ". Over Capa's head, a fresh faced kid from Brooklyn jumped into the flack-filled, cloud-muddied skies. He made it to the ground, fought his way halfway to Berlin and returned home safely. The faulty drying too had somehow added a special quality to them, one that lifts them out of that specific time and place, making them universal images of war. Sixty-eight years ago, on June 6, 1944, the Hungarian born photographer Robert Capa waded ashore on the beaches of Normandy with two Contax cameras wrapped in oilskins tucked into the folds of his jacket. "It was still very early and very gray for good pictures, but the gray water and the gray sky made the men, dodging under the surrealistic designs of Hitler's anti-invasion brain trust, very effective. That D-Day morning he was close enough. "The water was cold and the beach still a hundred yards away. A soldier got there at the same time, and for a few minutes we shared its cover. But when I'd meet him in Madrid, he was always dressed to the nines and I never saw him without a pretty mam'selle on his arm. He was a good man. Capa famously said that, "If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough. Making his way across the bloody deck, he reached the engine room and dried his hands by the engine's warmth. After putting his film in a press bag and sending it by courier for processing, he changed his clothes and returned to the beaches of Normandy on the first available boat. A week later, he learned that the images he had taken were considered the best images anyone had made of the invasion. Many publications added a caption to these photos, to explain to readers why they were blurred and slightly out of focus. . Out of the one hundred and six images Capa had taken only eight survived. I reached into my bag for a brand new roll, and my wet, shaking hands ruined the roll before I could insert it in my camera. "I paused for a moment…and then I had it bad. Capa reached the landing craft, but as he hauled himself on board, there was an explosion that covered him in blood and feathers. | VII Photo adds four photographers to Mentor programme The VII Mentor Program was launched three years ago to help young and emerging photographers build and polish the necessary skills to expand their professional practice. He believes that his youth and curiosity drive him to pick up themes which are easily and often overlooked. El-Tantawy, which was featured in BJP last year, splits her time between London and Cairo, where she has been extensively working since the revolution. "Between 2008-2009 she covered the Midwest region of the United States focusing on local politics, the financial crisis and social issues with The New York Times as a primary client," says VII. Franko, who's based in Slovenia, will be mentored by Christopher Morris. The four photographers will join Giovanni Cocco, Mikolaj Nowacki and Sim Chi Yin, who were selected for the VII Mentor Program last year. Franko, a documentary photographer born in Slovenia in 1993, has explored domestic and international social issues, "often touching on the loss of traditional values in the modern world," says VII in a statement. She will be mentored by VII Photo member Ed Kashi. Ahmed, who will be mentored by John Stanmeyer, "feels compelled to use photography to document the constant changes and impact the collective state of mind of the people," says the agency. In 2011 she was awarded a Fulbright fellowship in photography to return to Azerbaijan. Rivkin will be mentored by Ron Haviv. She started her career as a print journalism intern at the Associated Press in Madrid in 2007, and later spent time developing several photography projects in Ethiopia and her hometown of Chicago. from Pathshala, the South Asian Media Academy, with his final semester conducted abroad at the Danish School of Media and Journalism. | Christian Photographers, Lawyers to Appeal Decision Forcing Gay Marriage Services A New Mexico court has upheld a ruling that it is illegal for Christian photographers to refuse their services to same-sex couples because of their faith, arguing that it would be discriminating against a person's sexual orientation. Lorence of the ADF then appealed the verdict to the New Mexico Court of Appeals, and on May 31 the appeals court upheld the original decision of the commission. Neither same-sex marriage nor civil unions between couples of the same sex are legal in New Mexico. Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council also weighed in on the court's decision, writing in a recent newsletter that he sees this case involving a same-sex couple as part of a bigger trend against Christians. The couple was ordered to pay $6,637 to Willock's attorney for services. "Americans in the marketplace should not be subjected to legal attacks for simply abiding by their beliefs," said Attorney and ADF Senior Counsel Jordan Lorence in a June 4 press release. "Unfortunately, this is just a snapshot of what's happening around the country in business, sports, Hollywood, and schools," he writes. In 2008, the commission found the Huguenins guilty of sexual discrimination as found in the state's Human Rights Act, which states places of public accommodation may not partake in discrimination based on sexual orientation. "Should the government force a videographer who is an animal rights activist to produce a video promoting hunting and taxidermy? Of course not, and neither should the government force this photographer to promote a message that violates her conscience. According to court documents, Elaine Huguenin said she and her husband refused to photograph the ceremony because their beliefs were in conflict with the purpose of the ceremony. The ADF, a Christian legal alliance group, believes the court's verdict in this case sends a clear message that: "you will be punished if you do not fully endorse or promote the homosexual agenda, whether you agree with it or not. "The message a same-sex commitment ceremony communicates isn't one I believe," Hugeunin has said. The Willock v. Willock ultimately chose a different photographer for her ceremony, but filed a discrimination complaint against the company with the New Mexico Human Rights Commission. " . Still: I've always been interested in photography. That's when the magic happens. That's when I started getting serious, taking classes, investing in equipment and then eventually opening my business. Right now it is just a part-time gig, as part-time as owning a business can be. Still: Up until this point my core business has been maternity, newborns and families. But I know I will always come back to people. I was more of a memory keeper than anything up until my children were born, though. They also understand lighting, angles and composition. I think more and more people today recognize the valuation of professional photography, and while a consumer-grade camera can take a great picture today, professionals invest tens of thousands of dollars in equipment, even more on training and spend hours editing. But thanks to social media, the Internet and just old-fashioned beating the streets and meeting people, I'm starting to build my Florida client base. Maybe they are a mom who spends all day taking care of her little ones, or a business woman who is constantly on the go, and for those couple of hours you get to make it all about her. You get to make her feel as beautiful as she is. Still: The same way I make any of my clients feel comfortable, whether they are pregnant, a shy 2-year-old or women in a boudoir session: I become friends with them first, find common ground, and if it comes down to it I'll start cracking terrible jokes that if they aren't laughing at the punch line at least they are laughing at how ridiculous I am. Still: Absolutely, and I think that the rise in popularity of custom boudoir photography is just great. I never want to be happy with where I'm at with my photography, I always want to be better and grow as an artist. Every session I have I do a self-review and sometimes reach out to my circle of photographer friends for critique. Still: I think the biggest motivator I ever got was in my first photography class. I've only had a few students over the years that I can say this to, and you are one of them, this might be your living. Still: I think when you capture someone's essence that is when they appear their best. I aim for fresh, modern and natural poses, I try to show people just living and enjoying the moment or each other. I have boxes and boxes of photographs that I love to look through. I feel like photographs and songs are very much alike. Weddings are a whole new challenge and I have really enjoyed the experience. I was so nervous thinking this would be just like the time I was 8 and my tennis instructor told my mom and me after lessons one day that she should stop wasting her money. People are amazing to me and I love to capture individuality, uniqueness and emotion. Still: I think anyone can take amazing photos because no matter what, a photograph is a memory; some of my favorite photos of my kids are iPhone pictures! . " . It was a huge box of Omaha steaks. |

"It's difficult choosing careers but if I don't do photography then I want to do something in marketing or communications," says Barnett. Around middle school was the time where Alexis Barnett first started loving photography, though she didn't see herself as brilliant she saw herself as creative. " "Photography is something I love but just like many others I'm still deciding if this is something I'm going to be doing as a career, if not then it will be a hobby for me," says Barnett. As Barnett takes this pre-college program she will earn college credits which she hopes can make her stand out when she actually applies for NYU, her dream school. "Over the past few years I think I have really designed a "voice" or style that shows in all my photos and reflects my personality greatly," says Barnett. It's always important to have a plan B in life if plan A doesn't work out. "I'm nervous to live in New York City without having my parents around," says Barnett.
